Hi all
For about a week or so I have spotted a sparrow with white markings which I am totally amazed by. I would like to know more about the little fellow.

Hi Martyn

I moved your post to the more appropriate Garden Birds forum. This sparrow is leucistic. An albino would be all white with red eyes.

You can read more about this in our Dictionary

Thank Delia, I did look to see where to post. I only joined today so still finding my way around.
Thank you for you response Are birds that have leusistic rare? I have never seen anything like it.

Leucism in birds is fairly common, so not exactly rare. Though some species show this trait more than others. Some areas seem to be more prone too.

I usually have a Blackbird with at least one white feather (sometimes several and sometimes rather spotty) but haven't seen one this year. I've had just one sparrow with white outer tail feathers. It's mostly blackish birds that seem to have this trait.

In a way it's quite nice, as you can keep track of an individual.

I posted some pics back in Feruary of a Leucistic House Sparrow in my garden if you need anything for comparison. In the Scotland forum.
