Advice needed please on young seagull in my garden (1 Viewer)

Tony's garden

Hello all,
I returned from a week away and discovered a young seagull had fallen down my chimney and in the empty fire surrond - previously nesting between chimney pots with it's parents and siblings. I don't know how long it had been there.

Anyway I immediately managed to get it into box and placed it in my back garden. I then observed it from indoors to see if had any apparent injury. It seemed fine, just a little daunted by its new surroundings. I left it to gather itself together and watched during the day to see if the parents - still flying around the roof - would come and feed it. They did not come down , but just kept flying abouve at roof height and above the tree tops.

I watched it look around for food and water. When night fell it settled in a corner where there was a leaking water tank and it sipped the water constantly.

The next day I again observed it to see if the parents were coming down - but they did not so I gave it some food and placed a water bowl , large enough for it to get in , next to where it had spent the night.

WOW ! it ate all the food and played happily in the water. It has been attempting to fly but cannot get off the ground, however, it is getting further and further each time, but only when the parents are circling - 3 or 4 times a day.

This was 11 days ago - I have been feeding it each day and its parents are still flying above. It's siblings are fledged onto another roof and keep returning to near the nest. I spotted one in next doors garded and it came over the 10 ft high wall to be with the one in my garded for an hour or two, but has never returned.

I would like advice please on whether or not I should keep feeding it as it still cannot get out of the garden or fly up to it's parents . Also if the parents fly off for good I am concerned that it may loose it's habit of flying practice.

Can anyone give me advice pls ?

Hi Tony's garden and a warm welcome to you on behalf of the Staff and Moderators.

We have some general guidelines for you here.

It strikes me that there may be something wrong with his wings if he's not able to fly like his siblings and a trip to the vet may be called for. It is also possible that there is something else wrong with it, which is why the adults are ignoring it.

Good luck and let us know the outcome please.

Hi there and a warm welcome to you :t:

First, I applaud you and your efforts on trying to help this Gull out.

As Delia mentioned, I would think there is more going on here than you may be able to see so if you can get it to a rehabber/vet who may be able to diagnose it, that would be the next step.

Nature, is sometimes cruel but it is nature. There is a good possibility that the parent Gulls deserted this Gull due to their inner sense.

Please keep us posted.

Welcome to BirdForum! I am sure you will find lots to interest you here, and I hope you enjoy your visits. Good luck with the gull.
