Abandoned nest? (1 Viewer)

Hello. I have a few questions. My husband and I were doing some work around our patio cover and put flew what we think was a Carolina wren, we are in mid Tennessee. Upon further investigation it looks like she was nesting up there. There are eggs in the nest. I'm afraid she may have been too startled as she hasn't come back yet, several hours. How long should I give for her to return before I start to worry she abandoned it? If she did abandon it what do I need to do to help them out? I hate the idea of them just dying. I don't work so am home all the time. If they hatch I have lots of bugs that I breed myself for my bearded dragon so I can care for them but I don't want to mess anything up. Years and years ago I did find a robin who had fallen out of it's nest and we raised it successfully so I'm up to the task.

Hi cpappas and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. It may not be as bad as you fear (hopefully). How many eggs are in the nest? Small birds such as wrens don't lay all their eggs on the same day, but usually 1+3 days apart. The clutch for Carolina Wrens is usually between 3-7 eggs. It is not until the clutch is complete that they start to brood them; this is so that they will all hatch around the same time.

We have some general guidelines here for the care of injured and baby birds. But please don't try to rear them from the egg stage yourself. It is extremely difficult to do and losses are high. If it turns out the nest is abandoned, get in touch with a local humane society,

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Thank you. I'm not sure how many eggs. I didn't want to disturb the nest once I realized there were eggs. I did get in touch with a rescue and she assured me mom would come back. We have seen her in the nest a couple of times but not much. We are just leaving it alone and hoping for the best.
