  1. Contemplative

    Contemplative

This is the Masked Lapwing shown in the previous picture, I managed to zoom in on him so that I could actually properly identify him. There are two subspecies, the nominate form lacks the black shoulder band that this one has, so this one is also known as Black-shouldered Lapwing. I guess they...
  2. On the banks of the great Murray river

On the banks of the great Murray river

It appeared we left Gluepot just in time as it turned to rain.... and boy did it know how to rain. But my goodness, I wasn't expecting what followed that night in Barmera for it thundered, and clapped and thundered some more!!! And how the rain came down!!! As we walked along the road for...
  3. Why the head......

    Why the head......

.... tilt, I'm really not sure!! We turned off the road back to Rawnsley in order to take a look at the Cazneaux Tree. The only bird I saw in that area was this Masked Lapwing.
  4. Bandit?

    Bandit?

Arriving at yet another lake, we found this one had an island in the middle and between two ducks was a Southern Masked Lapwing. Pain pills are a right pain!! Seem to spend more time sleeping than anything else!!!
  5. Southern

    Southern

There's two subspecies of Masked Lapwing, this is the Southern Masked Lapwing which may, eventually get split. That'd be good, as I'd get an armchair split then LOL
  6. Exploring

    Exploring

We had a rather nice lunch in the cafe run by the boat company, then drove along the promenade where there were plenty of pull-in areas and car parks. In one we found this young Masked Lapwing. Didn't see an adult anywhere near him though.
  7. Morning light

    Morning light

I then wandered down to the water and found another early morning riser in this Masked Lapwing.
  8. Waterside

    Waterside

After hot and bumpy ride around the reserve, we got back to a different part of the homestead dam where this Masked Lapwing was hanging out.
  9. In a hole

    In a hole

We moved from the beach to Buckley's Hole, down some steps to a hide. This Masked Lapwing was right outside the window, so a nice start. He was actually keeping an eye on his wife and child as she moved the little one away from the perceived danger we obviously were LOL I'll be away tomorrow...
  10. They're everywhere

    They're everywhere

Heading for the coastal path, we found a Masked Lapwing in a grassy area. This was actually the first species I saw in Australia, as we left the airport there was one foraging on the grass verge. This was a much quieter area. There are two subspecies, this is the southern one. I guess it's...
  11. Cover your face

    Cover your face

It seems the birds knew about wearing masks, even back before Covid LOL. As we were walking back towards the car a Masked Lapwing wandered across the grass in front of us.

    Masked Lapwing 'novaehollandiae'

Taken with my trusty minicam in Summer Bay, NSW....yes, the home of Aussie soap Home and Away for those who watch it!
  18. After a wet....

    After a wet....

... and noisy night we woke to leaden skies in Barmera. But here's a Masked Lapwing looking at the Murray River. He looks a bit lonely, doesn't he.
  19. Masked

    Masked

There were one or two of these dotted around, but I managed to find this one isolated on a small island in the middle of the lake. A Masked Lapwing of the Southern variety, with the black shoulder band.

  21. Bandit?

    Bandit?

Another early riser down on the Homestead Dam was a Masked Lapwing.
  22. Masked

    Masked

Now we were back and passing the Homestead Dam again but the top end of it. Here a Masked Lapwing was presiding. There are two subspecies the nominate from New Guinea and North Australia, and this one from south and east Australia and New Zealand (which may one day be split as Black-shouldered...
  23. Guarding

    Guarding

We then moved to the south of the island to visit Buckley's Hole. This Masked Lapwing was below the hide, watching his missis escort their bairn away from the obvious disturbance we must have made on entering. Quite handsome up close, aren't they.
  24. In the air

    In the air

A pair of Masked Lapwings were also on the beach, and I gave myself a minute or two to take a picture of one of them flying around. Not too bad this one I thought. And I just realised I can see the spurs on his wings!
  25. Short grass

    Short grass

A short stretch through scrubby trees brought us to an open area and there wandering through was a Masked Lapwing. They seem to like short grassy areas. I saw these guys in many places throughout Brisbane, even along the sides of busy main roads. This is the southern subspecies.
