  1. S

Hi everyone! First post from me & my feathered friends

Hi all. Newbie here. I've recently moved to North Wales, having never had a garden before (at least, as an adult home owner & out in the country). I've built what I'm amused to call my "feeder array" from a mixture of scraps, with bought & scavenged feeders. I have fat balls, mealworm...

A common visitor to the lake near my apartment and I finally managed to take a photo of one that I actually quite like! :-)

The siskin is a small, short-tailed bird, 11–12.5 centimetres (4.3–4.9 in) in length with a wingspan that ranges from 20 to 23 centimetres (7.9 to 9.1 in). It weighs between 12 and 18 grams (0.42 and 0.63 oz). The bird's appearance shows sexual dimorphism. The male has a greyish green back...

    Siskin

Siskins have an unusual migratory pattern, heading South in large numbers every few winters but remaining in others. I didn't know this and had been wondering where they'd all got to the last two years, but this year they came back with a vengeance in huge flocks, which delighted me...

    Back in Sept ...

... there were also loads of Siskins about. I suppose that was because there were so many thistles and other Siskin favorites in seed. Now I haven't seen any for a good while. I hope it's just that they've found a food source up in the woods somewhere. Perhaps we'll see them at the feeders later...

    Calm

Trying to just breathe deeply and calm down. Some good news just ticked in on the election night programs, and I was able to calm down a bit. Maybe looking at this Siskin also helped a bit. Browsing BF would probably also help. I'll do that a bit through the night.

    Bounty

A big flock of Siskins and sparrows (both house and tree) was feasting on thistle seeds in a fallow field beside the trail. It was tricky getting close without disturbing them, but I did get a few good shots when they perched out at the edges of the field. I think this was the best of them.
