    A Common Loon cautiously watches the boat, ready to vanish if needed. These birds have incredibly bright throats. If trying to distinguish one of these from a cormorant at a distance, simply check whether the sun is out. If there's direct sunlight on the bird and you don't see its throat...

    Among my favorite birds are the loons. Common Loons like this one are migrating through my home area with a fervency right now. Was gone from Birdforum for a short bit of time, but it is good to be back
