long-billed dowitcher

  1. Long-Billed Dowitchers

    Long-Billed Dowitchers

When feeding, these birds are known for their "sewing machine" head movements. These two are mid-stitch. Their name may come from "Duitscher" referring to the German snipe.
  2. Long-Billed Dowitchers

    Long-Billed Dowitchers

I have read that it is very difficult to tell apart long-billed from short-billed visually. The best way is by the call. I wasn't paying attention to the vocalizations, unfortunately. If someone feels strongly that this is short-billed, I'll be happy to change the identification.

    Feeding Frenzy

One Dowitcher, most likely a short-billed, in very active feeding behavior. At close to 800 mm equivalent and handheld, there is a bit of wobble unfortunately, but I liked the feeding behavior and I hope you will forgive me.

  20. LBD: Three silly poses. Streeeeeetch

    LBD: Three silly poses. Streeeeeetch

Just before her nap. I say "her" because I think her bill is extra long, and bill length is the only way to tell females from males among the dowitchers. Adding to the difficulty, female short-billed have bills pretty much the same length as male long-billed, but in breeding plumage...
  21. LBD: Three silly poses

    LBD: Three silly poses

Last three of the Long-billed Dowitchers are more or less silly-looking poses (by human standards, that is). For a Long-billed Dowitcher, this pose is just the way you have to stand to scratch your nose.
  22. Dressed in red

    Dressed in red

Maybe even "Lady in red", only it's hiding its bill so it's hard to tell. Now to finish browsing, and then finish the ironing ... and that's it. House is cleaned. Cookies are baked. Rib roast is thawing in the fridge. Only problem left is that daughter and son-in-law are stuck in...

    Long-billed Dowitcher Pair AK SER'14

These birds were alternately feeding in shallow water and displaying to each other. I watched this mated pair for about a half-hour while taking photographs from progressively closer distances. This photo was taken from my closest position, about 25 m away. Afterwards, I gingerly retreated...

We went to check and see if these birds were still in the same area on our lake and sure enough, we found over twenty of them. They even made their way to within 20ft. of us.
