    Long-billed Corella

Somebody tipped me off to look carefully through all my Little Corella shots to see if I'd also captured a Long-billed pr two somewhere in the mix, and sure enough, I had. The easiest diagnostic mark is the orangey "slash" across the throat. Also the darker orange rather than pink...

    Long-billed Corella

No friend of the farmer this one when it uses it's long bill to dig up and eat the roots of crops .
  12. Long-billed Corella

    Long-billed Corella

Seem to be mixing in with the local flocks of Little Corella. Be interesting to see if any hybrids come out of this .

    'Another Hybrid!'

Hi all, just sharing another Hybrid, found at Eynesbury with a flock of Sulphur-crested Cockatoos....this one has the beak of the S/C Cockatoo not like the other one I posted that had the beak like the Long-billed Corella....the experts here are in agreement that we now have 4 Hybrids (two of...

    'Sighted again!'

Hi all, just had to share this one again, I used an image for my Xmas Card as didn't really know where to place it! I went to Eynesbury and went for a walk, (my respite) in the Greybox Forest, not too many birds as very dry, but when I got back to near the artificial lake the Cockatoos and...

    Long-billed Corella

These Corellas are not local to this area and probably originated from escaped tame birds eventually forming quite large flocks. The Judy Holt Reserve has a large number of old Scribbly Gum Trees with hollow branches and at the moment many different species of Cockatoos and Lorikeets are...

    Bit of space left...

It's hard to describe what these Long-billed Corellas are like when they all take to the air. Mayhem! Deafening screeches, but also breath-taking in quantity, and entertaining in aerial acrobatics! There were perhaps a thousand of them in surrounding trees & feeding in nearby paddocks.
  19. Cosy pair

    Cosy pair

Long-billed Corellas form monogamous pairs. Although native, they are considered a pest bird in many areas, destroying crops and digging large holes in golf courses. Some areas distribute permits for shooting in order to keep numbers down.
  20. Noisy screech!

    Noisy screech!

A thousand Long-billed Corellas in flight can be heard approaching from some distance!

    'Portrait'

Thought you all might like to see this portrait of a Long-billed Corella taken at Ballarat when Pete and I visited last week.....the difference is clear when see close, compared to the Little Corellas, the red around the eye and throat is quite vivid....we have several hanging a round here at...

    Long-Billed Corella

I thought i'd go to Albert Park Lake, a big artificial lake near the city. Really my biggest expectation was maybe seeing a few cygnets so I was pretty excited to find a flock of these and see one for the first time. Very friendly too, had to step back a couple of times to get them in frame.
