    Baillon's Crake

Thanks to Seth Miller in Bird Identification Q&A for helping me out!! This is our first capture of this Crake! We have been visiting Lake Kolleru for the past ten years and looks like we need to go back more often.... Though the Baillon's Crake is found across large parts of India, we have...

Nacunda Nighthawk -The field looked like it was covered in cow dung until one looked closely, the 'pats' were all nighthawks
  7. Kagu

    Kagu

I couldn't resist another image. The genus Rhynochetos refers to curved hair-like feathers that cover the nasal openings. It is from the Greek meaning "nose" and chetos meaning "corn." The specific name jubatus means "maned" or crested. The name...

    Noisy Pitta

    Remarkably relaxed bird.
  9. Nicaraguan Grackle

    Nicaraguan Grackle

There was a group of these birds with 4 males vying for the attention of one female. Each of the males would strut and display for 15 seconds or so. They were very civil as each male would take his turn and then sit back to watch the others. This was taken from a boat on the Rio Frio, in Cano...

  11. Macaroni Penguin

    Macaroni Penguin

I took this shot, handheld, from a Zodiac inflatable boat. I'm not exactly sure how I ended up shooting "down" on these guys. The waves were high but this angle doesn't seem possible. hmm...
  12. Macaroni Penguin

    Macaroni Penguin

All those little specks on that mountain side are nesting Macaroni Penguins. Although I watched for an hour, I have no idea how they maneuvered onto this cliff side. One heck of a commute for parents feeding chicks.
  13. Macaroni Penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus)

    Macaroni Penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus)

Not much more than moss, algae and lichen grows on Elephant Island. January is mid-summer and the "green" really shows off this Macaroni Penguin.

    In night mode ...

Forest night ... This low quality image was taken in night mode ... ... sitting on the forest floor near a natural waterhole ... when twilight had already moved into nightfall ... I'm still sharing it as it is : * a species endemic to the Western Ghats * uncommonly sighted as it is a...
  16. Karoo Bustard

    Karoo Bustard

locally known as the Karoo Korhaan; not the most colourful species but that's the point about great camouflage if you are going to creep around open fields and stubble ! The larger male on the right steadfastly refused to show his black throat.
  17. NZ Scaup close-up

    NZ Scaup close-up

As I headed towards the park exit to take a walk around the town center, I passed a stream where I had a close view to some NZ Scaup. They were diving, as Scaup will do, but I did get this one shot of one, close by and in decent light.
  18. First Chch lifer

    First Chch lifer

Next morning, after a quick stop to make a minor repair to my rental car (I might say more about that later, we'll see), I drove into the center of town and found parking alongside Hagley Park. The first bird I spotted as I walked into the park was another NZ endemic, and thus necessarily a...
  19. Macaroni Penguin

    Macaroni Penguin

This is a juvenile quite out of place in the midst of a large King Penguin colony. Note the head plumes are pale and much reduced, not meeting at the forehead.

  25. Kadavu Honeyeater

    Kadavu Honeyeater

Endemic to Kadavu Island, Fiji. I only encountered the species in the garden of the resort where we were staying, so cannot comment on its abundance. However Kadavu is relatively undeveloped with native forest intact, so it is likely to be doing reasonably well.
