  1. Pileated Woodpecker on New Year's Day

Pileated Woodpecker on New Year's Day

This large woodpecker swooped over my head while I was filling feeders in my back yard, landing in nearby trees long enough for me to get my camera and take a lot of shots. But the bird seemed a bit nervous about me getting close. I was lucky to get this shot!
  2. Pileated Woodpecker

    Pileated Woodpecker

Marsh. Instead we opted for an early morning at a nearby metropark. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by the loud drumming of this large North American woodpecker which we quickly found near the top of a dead snag. Although widespread, this area is marginally out of range and we were not...

I heard her hacking away at a tree again. I thought "I'll creep as close as possible to get a closer shot....OOPS! I've been spotted!"

Pileated Woodpeckers are mostly black with white stripes on the face and neck and a flaming-red crest. Males have a red stripe on the cheek. In flight, the bird reveals extensive white underwings and small white crescents on the upper side, at the bases of the primaries.

Pileated Woodpeckers - Age and Gender identification

Pileated Woodpeckers, the largest woodpeckers (if the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker is extinct, as it most likely is) are striking and unmistakable birds native to North America. There are a few details that help you figure out what the age or gender of the bird is. I will be using photos to help...

    Pileated Woodpeckers

Two Pileated Woodpeckers, both of which appear to be less mature than the ones I have been seeing! This is exciting for two reasons- there are more around my area than I thought, and I finally got a good photo of not just one, but two- A GOOD ONE.

This young Pileated Woodpecker is giving its distinctive call in this photo. I believe it's just out of the nest, it seemed a sort of uncertain in its movements. It sounded a bit plaintive. It might be lonely for its parents or nest mates.

Describe your first time seeing a Pileated Woodpecker

Not all of us have seen the massive Pileated Woodpecker before... but those of us who have were most likely shocked the first time we did! So, I'd like everyone to share your first encounter with one of these giants. I was nine years old, almost ten. I had just moved into... not the rich...

This woodpecker was on the ground looking for food. Thanks for your kind words on my last picture. Have a great day

    Pileated Woodpecker

This species is a very rare visitor to Alameda County. This male has been seen off-and-on excavating a roosting hole along the Stream Trail in Redwood Park this week. Several of us waited about two hours this morning before the Pileated Woodpecker finally appeared around 11:40am.

    Pileated woodpecker

Our largest woodpecker - impressively large bird and very striking in color. And loud in a few ways - one is the laughing cackle of a call, and the other is the hammering sound on various hardwoods and telephone poles that can be heard for hundreds of yards.

Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus subsp. pileatus) Female, species sexually dimorphic. Roadside with tame pasture on both sides of road with remnant coastal woods ca. 1,000 m (3281 ft) away. She appeared to be trying to excavate a nest hole on the back side of the telephone pole. North...

    Pileated Woodpecker (male)

Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus subsp. pileatus) Male, species sexually dimorphic. While visiting Buescher State Park in Bastrop County, near Smithville, Texas, USA this beauty flew straight towards my car about 3 m (10 ft) off the ground. He landed right behind me, I turned my car...
