Yorkshire Birding (1 Viewer)

Just been looking on Potteric Carrs website and there is a mention that the Ruddy Duck cull is to continue for another year. It states popoulation in Britain is down to 90 birds. Did not realise they were down to so few otherwise I would have reported on here earlier that there was a female on pugneys nature reserve lake around a week ago. Apologies if some of you wanted this for your year list etc etc.

Was going to head up to Hartlepool this morning but looks like the Robin has done a bunk, so thats one I wont be adding to my list:C
 
yeh, cos initiatives supported by large amounts of evidence and by well respected conservation bodies are always wrong in comparison to the UK400 clubs well constructed opinions.

I dont want to start off another debate here, it is definately the wrong place for it, but if you make emotive arguments like this, at least try and support it with something a little more substantive than the uk400 club website
 
For the record I have been down 3 times since I saw it and the bird is long gone, thats why I was apologising for not letting people know at the time. Clearly its divided on who would want to know.

We dont talk about breeding birds and their nest sites for obvious reasons but I wish someone would produce a 'bible' on what other birds/topics we are best leaving alone on here..........its a reet bloody minefield!!!!
 
Managed to catch up with Corn Bunting this afternoon whilst walking from home up to the YWT Ripon Loop reserve.They were just past the tennis club on the North side of Ripon and one of the two was carrying food so there is a fair chance they have bred.
 
Ah well tomorrows trip is up the spout!
So might as well go to Wykeham for a shufti.

Just had a water vole in nafferton beck when I went for a walk. Very showy swimming across the stream by the bridge and sitting on the bank.
 
Decided on a seaside trip today, given that Teesside is just over an hour away and was potentially very interesting I headed off. Got to Hartlepool at 0530 to find loads there already, about 100 in a few small streets under people windows, ladders against walls etc. Not my scene so went for a walk round the Headland, eider and kittiwake the only birds of note. Took straight off to North Gare and the creek , Yellow wagtail, Ringed Plover, Sanderling, Common terns and loads of Avocet. Went on to Saltholme and got annoyed there, again (2/2 visits). Scaup and Spoonbill were present, added swift to my roadkill list there. Red kites at Harewood on the way home, nice day.
 
unexpected day

Didn't have high hopes today odd weather and home jobs to do managed a couple of hours locally and was rewarded with the following Bullfinch,yellowhammer,greenfinch,grasshopper warbler,curlew,marsh harrier,swift,swallow,house and sand martin,redshank,mallard,crow,magpie,rook,kestrel,chiff chaff,chaffinch,blackbird,robin,dunnock,tree and house sparrows,song thrush,wren,great and blue tits. not bad for a not trying day.

greenfinch was the first of the year where have they all gone???
 
There's a very loud vol, occupies the main hide and talks loud and constantly. This time he was telling people where Long Eared Owls were nesting, first time he talked really loudly (and largely incorrectly) but when I went to the centre and asked them to have a word I was told that I had to expect this at RSPB reserves as they were trying to encourage wider membership. Cancelled mine.

Just seen your reply to an earlier post,surely the fact that now one of the Norths best birding site is under safe guarded control is a good thing,ok,you disagreed with a volunteers approach etc but does that mean you want to stop supporting the future of birds by withdrawing your subs ? Strange logic if you are.

Best to find out when said vol is on duty and go another time,I think I know the one you mean and he is not that bad and does go out of his way to help casual birders.The best birding is not always at the main hide,have done quite well just wandering around.As said it's a drastic move to stop supporting the country's leading conservation body,could you not have a quiet word with the full time staff?
 
Given limited funds I decided to join Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, it's not a single encounter but a general disillusionment with the way the RSPB is going, if I've got £50 to spend on subscriptions there are other bodies I think I would rather support.

Jim,I'm sure the YWT will put your subs to good use,plenty of sites to choose from,we have some great little ones in our area,Staveley being a favourite with us.It's no good sticking with something if you feel very strongly about it.
 
great news.. two churring nightjar at timble this evening, great views flying around within a few metres and often perching close by in good light, popped a few shots off but doubt they'll come to anything
