I think Google maps works fine in Morocco, we used it in 2019. No experience of other apps Cheers James

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

hi all, weekly update on changes in IOC 15.1 vs Gusasp's predicted list below. As before so far this has been a very reliable indicator of coming changes with only 2 changes in 15.1 that haven't been on the list (Amaui split and Mouse-coloured Tyrannulet lump). In terms of the IOC list the...

Bad news….. another 2 (or 3) to be scrubbed off my list, plus 3 swamphens 😬 but thanks for checking! James

So you think you missed Balearic shearwater, hooded crow and Stejneger’s stonechat? Or maybe these lumps aren’t decided yet? Now the WGAC listings are removed from Avibase I guess there is no way to check so we just have to wait? James

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

Checking back Balearic shearwater and Hooded Crow were also mooted as possible lumps in the Birdguides article but don’t appear in Gusasp’s master list? James

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

I agree with your overall concern but in actual fact Balearic shearwater doesn't appear on the list of expected splits linked to the harmonisation process (but it is still listed since 2022? as a proposed split by IOC) James

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

for those who are interested, here's the update showing which of the lumps and (few) splits Gusasp identified as coming down the track that have now occurred in IOC 15.1. The only changes in IOC 15.1 that aren't on this list as far as i can see are:- "Re-lump prematurely split Northern...

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

Two species down since this morning! 😢 I am expecting at least another 13 based on gusasp’s list but that doesn’t include Stejneger’s stonechat as noted so there could be more…. Must concentrate more on my percentage of total birds seen! 🤣 Cheers James

So I guess we just have to wait and see what happens with the stonechats? All the recent lumps from IOC were on your list I think James

Cambodia Siem Reap - without car or tour, how much can I see?

Didn’t do proper independent birding round Angkor but traveling round by tuk tuk (provided via the hotel) was good. I’m sure a car has its advantages but the breeze and the sounds and the general sense of being outside was really nice. They aren’t super fast though so maybe not ideal for more...

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

Stejneger’s and Siberian Stonechat was mooted as a forthcoming WGAC lump in the doom-laden British focussed articles a couple of months ago, but I can’t see it appearing in this list. I can’t see WGAC predictions on avibase any more to check (unless I am looking in the wrong place). Anyone...

    Morocco birding trip

Yes it’s safe and quite easy if you are prepared to self drive . Local guides are helpful for some species but you can see a huge variety of species on your own with good planning All the best, James

    Car hire in Oman

One possible reason for not allowing 2WD cars up super steep mountain roads is that deaths due to drivers burning out their brakes on the descents are apparently quite common (relatively speaking). This is exacerbated by the fact all cars are automatic so engine braking is difficult. James

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

Well I’d be interested to see those lists… The WGAC decisions are indirectly available on Avibase aren’t they so it should be possible to figure out the final tally of IOC lumps and Clements splits? Are all the “unique to Birdlife” splits going to be scrapped as part of the process do we...

    Japan June 2025

I saw Blakiston’s owl at Washi no Yado in June 2017. Of your other targets in E Hokkaido I didn’t see Siberian thrush, red-faced cormorant or harlequin, white’s thrush was heard only and i don’t remember if I saw Japanese thrush or blue and white FC on Hokkaido or only Honshu Cheers James

    Hokkaido May 2025

Main challenge in learning to drive on the “wrong” side of the road is using the manual gearstick with the “wrong” hand. Most hire cars in Japan are automatic which will make it much easier James

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

You need to bear in mind this current process is a reconciliation between the 3 lists so they will focus on taxa with different treatments across the lists. EYW is split in all 3 lists so won’t be a priority case. If there is good evidence they should be lumped hopefully that will follow in due...

    Jomo Kenyatta/Nairobi Airport

depending on how long you have it is quite close to the eastern gate of Nairobi national park but not sure if you can enter there or just leave. (You would need a guide and/or vehicle in any case). One word of caution. I was shaken down for a bribe by a machine gun wielding soldier who caught...

    Chile, Concepcion area RFI

Hi Niels, Sorry I missed this at the time, yes Altos de Lircay is still impossible to get into early in the morning, which is a crying shame really. Camping is off the table as an option. I have some 24hr sites for CTHH at termas de chillan and also just outside the park gates at Altos de lircay...
