Very early for blue tit nestbox investigations?

I have a nestbox cam too, and can confirm that they are often checking for nest sites already in December. I also had roosting Blue and Great Tits as early as November.

Birding in Arizona in early April

I hiked the Arizona Trail in 2017 (hiking from the Mexican border to Utah state line) from end of March to beginning of May, so roughly around the same time as your planned visit. I found it fantastic in terms of both scenery and birds (and some other animals too, snakes, Gila monster, etc). I...

I may or may not have seen one. There is no way of knowing really. The annoying thing is that you can't tick Common Crossbill there either, because it could be a Scottish, so whatever you see it's basically an unidentified bird :D No tick.:D. Time to lump it!

    Bird Watcher vs Birder

One time I was staying in a reserve in Ecuador where a group of French people were watching monkeys all day for research purposes. When I talked about "birding", they had no clue what I was talking about. I then coined the term "monkeying". I went birding and they went monkeying. We kept using...

    Bird Watcher vs Birder

Among birders, I use "birder" and "birding" Among non-birders, I generally use "birdwatcher" and "birdwatching", because otherwise they often don't know what I'm talking about.

    RSPB proposes cuts?

I always assumed that the shops and cafes were intended to generate extra income that could be used for conservation. If they are actually losing money, then by all means close them down asap!

Such a waste of money. People have spent thousands of dollars to see birds that now get lumped. Perhaps the splitting was all a plot to stimulate "growth"! :D

Cambodia Siem Reap - without car or tour, how much can I see?

If you want to bird around the temples, just rent a bicycle in town (unless you are carrying a scope). This is how I got around in my pre-birding days (2011) when visting these temples, and I would do so again if I wanted to bird the area.

How many people use field guide book in the field?

If possible I'm using both electronic and paper. I backpack/camp a lot but if the paper field guide is somewhat transportable, then I still like to have it. On my last foreign trips I used the Merlin app and had a paper field guide in my daypack, which was still referenced quite often. I also...

    Itatiaia NP, Brazil

    1) Is this a female Yellow-eared Woodpecker or a female White-spotted Woodpecker? I thought it might be Yellow-eared, based on the golden tinge, less barring on the back and also the yellowish ear, rather than whitish. This was spotted at Donati Hotel (~950m elevation) at forest edge (rather...

How many hummingbird species have you seen?

I've just added 14 new ones in Brazil, bringing my total to 115. A few of the additions were real stunners, like the male Green-crowned Plovercrest and male Frilled Coquette!

    How's Your 2024 List Going?

I'm not keeping country lists or anything, but I got 274 lifers so far this year for my world life list. The last one, number 2697, was a Chestnut-capped Blackbird in Brazil on the way back to the airport in Sao Paolo. Total world species in 2024 for me is 536.

A one generation hobby…and a concern for the future

I find it interesting to read that many here started birding at young age. I only started at 42! Just before a (non-birding) trip to Malaysia I had bought (cheapish) binoculars that I expected to use perhaps a couple of times during that trip. Instead, I found myself observing nature almost...

A one generation hobby…and a concern for the future

As an aside, Merlin really lowers the bar for the smartphone generation. Even if you don't know any birds, just download the app and let it tell you what birds are singing or calling. This must really lower the bar for any beginners (both young and old).

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

Just back from Brazil, where I got 175 lifers. But the last lifer of a trip is usually not the most exciting one, because it is one that you see along the road back to the airport :D So here it is: Chestnut-capped Blackbird

How do you keep your lifelist, and what is included?

Until 2016 I kept everything in an Excel sheet. Then when I discovered Scythebill, I moved everything over. That was a lot of work initially, even with my still relatively short list. The problem wasn't the import itself which was fast (I'm quite skilled with Excel) but while importing I...

Binoculars for those with rubber/latex allergies?

I regularly spend time just going through my data in Scythebill. It's not so much the lists themselves that I enjoy, but reliving the memories of the trips that I made "collecting" these birds. Many sightings I can still remember (greatly helped by having the list), and many of the "troubles" I...
