Review by 'LHB1' on item 'Ultravid 10x42'

This is the Leica binocular I've been wanting despite already having Leica Trinovid 10x42 BA, 10x32 BN, and 8x32 BA. The new HD bino is slimmer, sharper, with better feel in the hands, longer eye relief, improved optics (coatings), closer near focus, and several ounces less weight. You can...

    Flash sync speed

Roy, For 35mm cameras, you are mixing two different things: flash sync and proper exposure (shutter speed and aperture combination). The flash must fire during the period when shutter is open to admit light to film. The fastest speed at which the flash will coincide with open shutter is...

    Ramsey Canyon AZ Hummingbird ID?

Hi Greg, Nice hummer pics. My guess would be immature Black Chinned hummer. They are common to that area although I failed to spot one when we visited there some years back. There were so many hummers around the multiple feeders that we were overrun with hummers. It was sometimes difficult...

    Question about hummingbird behavior

While visiting Estes Park, Colorado, last month I observed a hummingbird feeding on tiny insects over the Fall River for about an hour on two consecutive evenings. This was the first time I had seen a hummer feed on anything but flowers/feeders/etc.

    Best bino for birding

My current Leica binos are about 7-10 years old. The 10x42 Trinovids are excellent in low light and the 10x32's are just slightly less so. The lighter weight 10x32's are easier to carry, especially when also carrying the camera (Leica R9) and tripod. At age 70, I'm not as strong as I used to...

    What magnification

In South Texas, I have experienced problems with heat mirage and wind vibration at magnifications of 32X and 45X. My choice is 25X with Nikon Field Scope (78mm).

    Best bino for birding

I also prefer 10X binoculars for birding and general use although my choice is another brand (Leica 10x32 and 10x42). If you like the Swarovskis and the eye relief is long enough for you, then choose the one that you like best and go for it. LB

how do lens zoom #s compare to bin zoom #s?

Sean, I think you are confusing terms. a. The 8x or 10x on binoculars is the magnification factor. An 8x bino magnifies the image 8 times larger than seen with the naked eye. A 20x eyepiece on spotting scope typically yields a magnification of 20x unless used with a scope body having...

    Trinovid 10x32 vs other Trinovids

Jelmer, I have both the Leica 10x32 and 10x42 Trinovid BA binocs. If my notes are correct: a. 10x32 = 13mm ER, 357 ft FOV, 23 oz. b. 10x42 = 14mm ER, 331 ft FOV, 31 oz. When sitting in one place for viewing I prefer the 42 binocs but when walking, the 32's are almost always...

Lower Rio Grande Valley, TX - May 2009

Nice pictures. Laguna Atascosa NWR is a great birding experience. It is even better when the salt grass flats contain shallow water. Green Jays are so abundant at the Visitors Center as to almost be a nuisance. Despite several visits we have not been able to positively view an Aplomado Falcon...

    New Member, Houston, TX

Thanks for the welcome. Definite improvement in the right eye today, 20/30 vs 20/200 before surgery yesterday. Have already scheduled surgery for the other eye later this month. Can hardly wait for both eyes to heal and get back to birding and pistol shooting. May have to treat myself to a...

Hello to all. Looking forward to getting acquainted. Hobbies include birding, photography (scenics, animals, birds), pistol shooting, and travel. Heavy into optics (binocs, scopes, camera lenses). May be a while before my next post as I am having cataract surgery tomorrow with another to follow...
