Mediterranean or Black Headed Gull - southern France

I've always been rubbish with Gulls, so could some kind person tell me if this is a Mediterranean or Black Headed Gull, and more importantly what differentiates them in this winter plumage? The picture was taken 3 days ago on the river in Toulouse. In reality I would say the bill was a slightly...

    Raptor West Sussex UK

I thought this was a common buzzard when seen in the distance but having photographed it and zoomed in I'm thinking more Marsh Harrier - any opinions ? It was at Pagham Harbour, West Sussex, UK, flying over reed beds and farmland.

Wader - Pagham, South Coast UK

Good morning, hoping someone can help identify the wader (bottom left). I thought it was a juvenile greenshank at the time but it doesn't seem to have the down turned bill tip. I've left the redshank in the pic to give an idea of size.

    Recommendation for very compact binoculars

Has anyone got a recommendation for compact binoculars that fit easily into a jacket pocket. They would be for general walking in the countryside use rather than serious bird watching sessions. Looking at a budget of around £100. I realise I'm not going to get the highest specification for...

    Blue Tits Following Jay

We had a Jay in the garden (suburban, South Coast UK) that was followed by 2 blue tits as it moved from tree to tree. Everytime it moved, the 2 tits would follow to the same tree a few seconds later and landed a few feet from the Jay. I can only think that maybe they had chicks in the area...

    Robin Spotted !

My 3 year old grandson spotted a robin yesterday, while out on a walk, and announced with great confidence " its a robin because its got a red chest" - not a bad start at all. :)

    Disappeared Birds

I put a feeder pole up about 4 months ago and soon got a sizeable crowd of various tits, housesparrows, dunnocks etc feeding regularly on the fatballs and seeds (sometimes up to 12 at a time first thing in the morning). Then suddenly about 2 weeks ago they all stopped - not a single visitor. Is...

    Bird of Prey in Pyrenees

Any help with this would be welcome. It was above farmland approx 20km north of the Pyrenees - it looks buzzard except for the tail seems too "scuffy" and the head too white.

Where to go from here ?

Hi, probably in common with everyone else on this forum, I'm looking to get ever sharper and brighter shots with more impact. I drifted into bird photography a few years back with a D50 and kit zoom lens. Since the I've updated to a D90 with a 300mm f4 (prime) and a 1.4x Kenko Pro300 converter...

    Nesting Herring Gulls

Hi, a pair of Herring Gulls have nested on a flat garage roof a few feet above our drive and front door. The nest has 3 eggs in it. I've heard grim stories of how aggressive Gulls can be when the young hatch - what can we expect in a few weeks time ??? :-C

    Software for sorting photo's

Can anyone recommend a PC software package that is good for sorting bird photo's. I'm looking for something that enables you to sort/search by various factors eg location, date, species etc. Not bothered about doing advanced photoshop type stuff, but re-sizing, trimming , auto-sharpening would...

"Scurrying" little bird - Sussex UK

Glancing out of the kitchen window yesterday I saw a small dull brown/grey bird - a little too big for a wren but a little too small for a sparrow. I would hardly have given it a second look apart fom its very characteristic scurrying motion. It was almost mouse like, dashing in straight lines...

    Life after D50 ?

A Nikon D50 was my first DSLR and I've happily used it for a good few years now - mainly for bird photography. My main concern is getting increased sharpness and so I invested in a Nikon 300mm/f4 prime lens a while back. The first question is will upgarding to a more modern DSLR inherently...
