    Diver ID please?

On the subject of paper field guides, I remember years ago reading advice that when buying your first guide, never buy anything with the word 'European' in the title, on the grounds that its hard enough identifying UK birds without the added confusion of multiples of European variants. I'd...

Mediterranean or Black Headed Gull - southern France

I've always been rubbish with Gulls, so could some kind person tell me if this is a Mediterranean or Black Headed Gull, and more importantly what differentiates them in this winter plumage? The picture was taken 3 days ago on the river in Toulouse. In reality I would say the bill was a slightly...

    Raptor West Sussex UK

I thought this was a common buzzard when seen in the distance but having photographed it and zoomed in I'm thinking more Marsh Harrier - any opinions ? It was at Pagham Harbour, West Sussex, UK, flying over reed beds and farmland.

Pipit : Lizard Point SW England

Hi, this taken today on shoreline at Lizard Point SW England. Looks rock pipit to me but (experienced) birding friend says more like water pipit. Any votes either way ? Thanks in advance

Bird of Prey in New York city

Thanks for the replies. The pic was taken a couple of days ago in lower east side Manhattan. I'm uk based so not a bird I'm familiar with, but I understand they are becoming common in NY. Apologies, meant to post this thread in the Bird ID forum. Maybe a kind moderator could move it to its...

Wader - Pagham, South Coast UK

Good morning, hoping someone can help identify the wader (bottom left). I thought it was a juvenile greenshank at the time but it doesn't seem to have the down turned bill tip. I've left the redshank in the pic to give an idea of size.

    Recommendation for very compact binoculars

If you're going to NY then you must check out B&H in Manhattan. Its an absolute mega store of optics and cameras. I believe it claims to be the largest in the US. Walking distance from the main hotel/theatre/Time Square area. B and H Store NY

    Recommendation for very compact binoculars

Thanks Stu and Mike for taking the time to respond with your helpful advice. I've ordered a pair of Nikon Travelite 10 x 25 from John Lewis because I happen to have some of their gift vouchers. They stock the 10 x 25 and 12 x 25 and oddly the 12x are cheaper than the 10x which seems the wrong...

    Recommendation for very compact binoculars

Has anyone got a recommendation for compact binoculars that fit easily into a jacket pocket. They would be for general walking in the countryside use rather than serious bird watching sessions. Looking at a budget of around £100. I realise I'm not going to get the highest specification for...

    Blue Tits Following Jay

We had a Jay in the garden (suburban, South Coast UK) that was followed by 2 blue tits as it moved from tree to tree. Everytime it moved, the 2 tits would follow to the same tree a few seconds later and landed a few feet from the Jay. I can only think that maybe they had chicks in the area...

Views from a train driving cab

Its well documented that birds seem less suspicious of cars than of people. Is it the same with trains ? ie do birds fly for the hills as you roar past, or sit on the fence / branch immune to the sight and sound of the train ?

    Robin Spotted !

My 3 year old grandson spotted a robin yesterday, while out on a walk, and announced with great confidence " its a robin because its got a red chest" - not a bad start at all. :)

Not the normal hide, but whatever works :) Looking forward to hearing more of your sightings. I was bought up in Preston and have family in Lancaster and near Kendal so know the places you mention.

    Nesting Blue tits

Hi, from my very limited experience, the chicks are probably ok if the parent(s) are still coming with food. Sadly the great tit chicks in our nest box died (I don't know why) but the parents immediately stopped going into the box. They would land on the box peg and surrounding branches but...

    Keep or chuck!!

I'd be chuffed with either, but the rain drops make it more interesting and different IMHO - without them it looks like any other very good puffin shot (if that makes sense).
