What website to order from now?

Since Eagle Optics is gone, I am not sure what site to direct people to that might have a similar amount of variety & a great return time like EO. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    Why do midrange binoculars exist?

As a review of the Mavens, I appreciate your post. As far as why mid range bins exist & if we can spend $500-1000, we can all afford alphas - the question & statement are ludicrous. No, not everyone can or wants to fork over $2000-3400 for binoculars. Have mercy, this is the first post on BF...

Advice for Texas in November please...

If lodging is needed, I HIGHLY recommend the Alamo Inn B&B. Run by a birder, for birders. Located in Alamo and within driving distance of pretty much anything. http://www.alamoinnbnb.com/

Advice for Texas in November please...

I somehow missed this post. If you are in the valley, Aransas will be 2 plus hours away from you. You could hit Brownsville or Harlingen for parrots. Falcon Dam may produce a few western birds, but it isn't the birdiest of spots. Are you doing any field rrips, or are you doing the hotspots on...

Mid-size shootout, Pentax 9x32 vs Celestron Granite 9x33

I am one of a few that didn't think the reply was rude. I have seen some rude replies here and that wasn't one! The point, yes. One thing to keep in kind when posting to this forum is that many of the people here know the fine points of optics, whether it is because of their profession or years...

    Spotters Scope help

Take the time to look at the posts in the optics forum, particularly the scopes subforum. A huge amount of information is available there, on just about every scope made.

    Help choosing first binoculars

Who will be using the bins the most - you or the kids? The Yosemites have a smaller IPD, which will work far better for the kids. The other binoculars may or may not accomodate kids with small IPDs. If you will be using them the most, make it worth your time and spend more than $200 to get...

Are BF (optics) Posters Representative of Birders Generally?

Brock, I am still here, reading and plotting to get more bins! I have been birding for 9 years. In those 9 years, I have met 1 person with more than one pair of bins and it is a woman I have known since I began birding. She is the only person I have met that knew there where more than 8x42 or...

    High Island in late March?

There are a few early warblers & other migrants that might be coming through in March, but April will be your best best hands down. The last 2 weeks of April, specifically that last weekend in April, is usually the best. If I were making this trip, I would go mid to late April.

    What kind of flycatcher

The only option right now is the Eastern Phoebe as pointed out above.

    Porro or Roof?

Have mercy, I think I am losing my mind! So back to what I originally posted. I think buying bins that cost $100 would be a waste of time & money. I am NOT an optics snob. I think this because I have some. I also had the Yosemites and didn't care for them either. If it were me going on this...

    Information about South Padre

Are you only birding Padre proper? If you bird other areas, like Harlingen or any where else in the valley, you will certainly get different birds.

    Red-legged Honeycreeper in LRGV

I did try to find the crane. Spent all day trying to spot it, along with about a dozen other people. I had to drive home (5 hr drive) and wanted to.hit some Lubbock hot spots if I could. Gave up around 4 and drove back to Lubbock. At 4:30 a friend sent me a text saying it was out by itself, in...

    Red-legged Honeycreeper in LRGV

Thought about it, however I decided to go chase the Common Crane in Lubbock instead.

    Canon SX50 Specs

No nit shooting in raw. I used Crazy Fingers settings for C1. Although the birds were close to me, the lens was at full zoom. I will look at the specifics for each & post the settings. Considering how close they were, I really thought the photos would be really sharp.

    Canon SX50 Specs

Took some more shots to get more familiar with the camera. I believe that these were taken with C1 per Crazy Fingers settings. maybe C2, but am pretty sure C1. At any rate, the birds were probably 10-15 ft away from me at most. I really thought the junco would be clearer, but instead it is very...

    Canon SX50 Specs

I have purchased an SX50 and tried a few photos after programming it with Crazy Fingers set up. Having looked literally through every post in this thread and every photo, many of you have taken better shots of birds at a farther distance than the ones I have taken from a relatively close...

Bald Eagles along the Red River?

Lake Tawakoni & Lake Fork are not that far apart. You do see them at Tawakoni, but more often at Lake Fork. They have even started showing up at Benbrook Lake, just outside of Ft Worth, however you don't see it all the time.

Bald Eagles along the Red River?

Try Lake Fork. They do an eagle tour as well I believe, in Jan. You should be able to google it and get an idea of where to look even before Jan. I see them at John Bunker Sands as well, in Kaufman county. You can bird JBS the 1st & 3rd Sat of every month. http://www.wetlandcenter.com/

    Grassland winter birds

The Mountain Plovers are there every winter. They do blend in a field though! I got my lifers in Williamson county and I kept looking & looking. Finally there was a movement & all the sudden I saw them all over! The Sprague's are winter migrants, so we all hope for those!

    Grassland winter birds

I don't know that the Sprague's is a given any where in the LRGV. As for Mountain Plovers, check NARBA (Texas) & eBird for sightings. There is a farm area where they are usually seen, but for the life of me, I can't remember the name of the road. Usually people start posting as soon as they are...

A MANIFESTO: The Way it Really Works

Thanks for the information! It was a very interesting read. I didn't think the GR thread was out of hand, but am always surprised at the misinformation that is taken for truth. There are few products truly produced in the US. Doesn't surprise me that the big 3 outsource. Perception is...

Leupold Gold Ring HD 8x32 versus SV 8x32

Thanks Arthur! I actually want the 10x42's. Usually the used price or demo price isn't much below brand new, so if that is the case, I may as well buy new. I have purchased from them before, they are good people.

Leupold Gold Ring HD 8x32 versus SV 8x32

By the way, SWFA is about 30 minute drive for me. While I was admiring some bins they had, I let them assess my GR's out of curiosity. They offered me $400. Of course, they would sell them for a bit more. NOT $749 though. That being said, I think the used prices for the top 3 alphas are...

Leupold Gold Ring HD 8x32 versus SV 8x32

Wow, Dennis is the one selling the GR for $700+?! Wow! Good luck with that! I saw that and was stunned at the starting bid! I have Bryce's GR HD 8x32 and while I really appreciate it, I wouldn't buy it for $700! Dennis, I am not sure what to make of this new you! BH, enjoy your Swaros, you...
