    Fuerteventura in November

So you've seen Slender-billed Barn Owl? :D I cycled that road and as far as I remember, while there could be some trails, most of it is open desert so you could just walk in anywhere.

    Himalayan owl in Taiwan

I don't know how easy it will be in summer, but the stretch between: 24.2600, 120.9932 and 24.2826, 121.0291 (known as the Dashueshan road, between KM 40 and 50) seems OK-ish with multiple observations. coordinates in some reports (e.g.)...

Philippines Return - Mindanao, Negros and Luzon

That's what I thought as well, the suggestion it could be e.g. juvenile is because I don't have anything better to suggest, but I will ask some people, that should be in the know, about the streaking on this particular bird.

How do you prepare for a birding trip ?

This is a very broad question, and I am surprised to see very specific answers. There are some elementary things to check when preparing a birding trip: 1. what birds can you expect in a certain area / country, also taking into account the time of year? 2. once you have a list of possible...

Philippines Return - Mindanao, Negros and Luzon

I have no interest / reason to doubt the ID, just pointing out the oddity of those streaks on the breast, either some variation in plumage or (as I suggested) not a full adult or... An interesting bird in any case!

Philippines Return - Mindanao, Negros and Luzon

I looked into it a bit, and while I am not fully convinced, I don't find a better alternative. The one thing that baffles me is the vermiculations on the chest, vs the broad painted streaks you'd expect on a Giant Scops (could this be a young bird?). Some more pics would be helpful, especially...

    Paraguay and Argentina, Dec 2024

I thought the trick to get Argentinian currency is (still) to send US dollars through Western Union to yourself... And thus get the (previously much much better, now maybe just somewhat) better blue dollar rate.

    Marrakech early April

I was in Marrakech beginning of this month. For the birding, you'll readily have Common Bulbul, House bunting, Greenfinch, Pallid and Common Swift, Common Wood Pigon, Spotless Starling, Collared Dove, Common Kestrel, Eurasian Blackbird,... from wherever you stay. With some focus, you can also...

The benefits of ecotourism - examples

I came along this post on Facebook, and found it very interesting. I may not be the only one as it generated a lot of reactions, both supporting and rejecting the message. So it got me thinking: what are the real benefits (if there are) of ecotourism for birds conservation? The main benefit I...

Lesser Florican 28-30th of July 2025

I'll arrive in Delhi on the 27th of July around 9PM and transfer to a hotel approx. 1 hr South of Indira Ghandi airport. The plan is to go towards Sokhaliya the next morning with pre-arranged car + driver (approx. 6hrs drive), arrive around mid-day, bird in the afternoon, bird there the next...

    Name a Bird You've Seen 2

A woodpecker... I have 2 of those left and the one below is easy (an E vs. W Himalaya split), at least I hope I have the right one as the names are a bit confusing (Crimson-naped Woodpecker (Scarlet-breasted Woodpecker) = E Himalayas, but its congener = Necklaced Woodpecker is probably less seen...

Zeiss victory pocket model 8x25B*T vs. current 8x25 model

I recently took my beloved 8x25 VP to Morocco on a family trip with some birding, and I can honestly say I didn't miss my big x42 bins for a moment. I had very targeted birding in mind (9 possible lifers) and I couldn't fault the bins during any search, be it early morning, late evening or even...

    costa rica

I'd say pretty much every time of year can be good for birding, but while winter months (and early spring) are mostly preferred, you should also look at target birds, e.g. Bellbirds sing from March/April on and Umbrellabirds become active at their leks. If you want to hear / see those birds you...

ZEISS 8x32 Victory SF or Swarovski 8x32 NL Pure

It's sad that your previous post (#10) was spot-on, as this one is only gibberish. You're the one having misread Denco's post, and your reaction showed. You try to refute Denco's opinion, 1. by saying 'almost distinguishable' (sic, you mean indistinguishable), but the 'almost' gives away that...

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

Maghreb Owl. It took me 3 hours in the evening (7-10 PM) before I was totally exhausted and decided to get up at 3 in the morning and try again. Finally, at 6AM, after checking out the main stake-outs for quite some time, I lucked into it by randomly trying along the road up to Oukaimeden.

    Puerto Rico 2025

It’s actually a Western tragopan, from great Himalaya national park. And I am fascinated by tragopans . :) Your picture of Temmincks is very good but I was mostly blown away by your blood pheasant photos; excellent stuff!

I thought you were a bit over enthusiastic with your comment, but having checked Newton's site I have to say there are some very very aesthetically pleasing galleries (if not all) on that site. Newton, if anything, make sure you have your site as a hyperlink in the footer of your posts, that...

Would you buy a used Victory SF with these marks?

Some observations, from someone who is not a collector but a user of binoculars: 1. cleaning marks vs scratches: one doesn't exclude the other: Not carefully cleaning with sand / small particles on the lenses, whiping / frotting them off, can result in those cleaning marks / scratches. 2. You...

NL reliability anecdotes / info: I hesitate to link this here, but I think it’s worthwhile

For those who visit the forum less frequently, we had this opening post: And we had this answer: Now if you want to waste your time reading everything in between, there is some signal and an awful lot of noise. So grab some popcorn and draw your own conclusions / do your own research. ;)

NL reliability anecdotes / info: I hesitate to link this here, but I think it’s worthwhile

Well, here is my conclusion / questions (and I ask this rather polite): Maybe we can agree that we're talking about the use (maybe in some people's book abuse) of binoculars in a way that you don't have any experience with, and that any conclusions with regards to how you experience how these...

NL reliability anecdotes / info: I hesitate to link this here, but I think it’s worthwhile

I specially mention sweat and DEET as those are, per Swarovski’s own communication, identified as being very harmful for their rubber armour. Even when dropped you don’t get degraded rubber like this: the damage is clearly chemical given the multiple small cracks, rather than by physical impact.

NL reliability anecdotes / info: I hesitate to link this here, but I think it’s worthwhile

Good, you say what you see. I tend to do the same and there is zero reason to cast doubt about anyone’s motifs or opinions, just because you don’t like them. We’re just talking about bins and what’s good and bad. If your NLs have held up, that’s promising and as I said before, I wouldn’t want...
