    2016 UK Orchids

Thanks very much to all those who helped me out with info on places to go in Kent. Had a great trip in glorious weather.

    2016 UK Orchids

Hi all, I'm off to Kent tomorrow for a few days and hoping to catch up with some of the orchids down there that I won't have seen in East Anglia, especially Lady Orchid, Fly Orchid, Monkey Orchid and Early-spider Orchid. Staying just outside Whitstable. Was going to visit Queendown Warren and...

    Norwich Birding

Absolutely Ricky, I've really been enjoying the Starling spectacle of late but what was even more amazing was the amount of shoppers opened mouth looking upwards in awe!

    Norfolk Flora

It's been a great year for some of the more difficult to see Norfolk Orchids. Several spikes of Lesser-butterfly Orchid in the county included this 'well-watched' spike on the north coast and at least 23 spikes of Green-flowered Helleborine are at one site (perhaps a county record), although...

    2014 UK Orchids

Interesting... I did consider E. dunensis when I found them but but didn't recall the ones I'd seen previously (at the inland Lincs site) so I wrote them off as Broad-leaved. Looking at lit though it's clear that's they are this species. Wonder if it is a new site... Got some more photos (but...

Just to echo Mark's comments, any directions please?? People crying out for them! I'll head that way after work if so, looking like a MEGA record

    2014 UK Orchids

Whilst at a conference on the outskirts of Bolton this week I was pleasantly surprised to find a good stand of Broad-leaved Helleborines growing along the side of the main road at the edge of the retail park! Unfortunately only had my phone with me.

    UK dragonflies and damselflies, 2014

Hi all, I'm heading to the New Forest for the first time this weekend. I know there are some sites mentioned on this thread but would be great to have some more info about general good sites and species. I'm particularly keen to see and photograph Golden-ringed Dragonfly, Southern Damselfly...

    2014 UK Orchids

Hi all, I'm off to the New Forest for the first time this weekend. If anyone has some gen they wouldn't mind PMing me, especially about species I won't have seen before (being from Norfolk), I'd really appreciate it.

    2014 UK Orchids

Thanks Sean and Peter, from your comments my plant looks like fulvofusca of all the vars. The only vars that I know to have occurred in Norfolk previously are chlorantha and flavescens.

    2014 UK Orchids

Hi Sean/Rich M, Thanks. I was erring towards fulvofusca (correct name for the 'var' rather than atrofuscus?) as opposed to bicolor. Doesn't look entirely typical but I guess like with all vars its a spectrum? What are the defining characteristics of this var and does it fall within any set...

Bee Orchids Any thoughts on the two Bee Orchids pictured below, photographed in a colony in Norfolk? Certainly smart! Comparison with a more typical spike too.

    Norfolk birding

Are Lesser Redpolls common in captivity? I know that 'yellowpolls' aren't that rare in the wild and have to say I assumed it would be from a colour-ringing programme in Britain or elsewhere. Any more info/suggestions appreciated.

    Norfolk birding

Snettisham Coastal Park 'Yellowpoll' Recently at Snettisham Coastal Park there has been a confiding Lesser Redpoll (actually a 'Yellowpoll' by the looks of it) frequenting the small grassy pathways past the carpark. Interestingly, as you can see from the pics taken by my nan Pam Rand, it is...

    Norfolk birding

Major spring surprise - ALPINE ACCENTOR So yesterday was the day when my birding dreams came true, it all came together and I found a completely unexpected MEGA at Holme! A quick peek at the charts and conditions suggested it would be worth an early start and so me and Sophie were on site at...

Out of mere curiosity what were 'the other three' warblers?

    Norwich Birding

Interestingly I had 2+ Crossbills over the UEA campus (main square) this morning at about 9.15am but unfortunately they were very high. Nothing at the time to suggest they weren't Common though so I'm guessing different birds. Several Redwings over in the dark last few nights.

    Norwich Birding

I had a Mealy in the hedge by the feeders with Chaffinches and at least 8 Lessers during the week
