Blackbirds acting like drama queens for no reason

Whilst sitting a bench having a butty in a local park I have had blackbirds land in front of me and utter alarm like calls .. it quickly became evident that they were begging for a share of my sandwich. I have also observed robins doing the same.

    Olympus Tough TG4

I bought this little camera used from LCE last year .. I have found the microscope mode combined with the focus stacking to be a nice feature especially to get shots of the tiny insects that sit on fences. The versions of the camera with focus stacking are the TG4, TG5 & TG6 I think. I suspect...

    Fuji sl100 or the HS50

I have recently pulled a Fuji HS50 out of hibernation. I am quite impressed with the quality it can still deliver in good light, I have also been happy with a couple of raw images taken in poor light.

Is it time to change to 4/3

I have used m4/3 for about 18 months now. Its advantage is light weight but there are penalties down to there will be more noise. I would say that if you can bear carrying the weight full frame or DX and the associated lenses will usually be better, hover if like me what you can carry is limited...

Is it my Tamron or is it me.

You actually did fairly well with what is a cheap lens. If you have no stabilisation you do need to either support the camera or use a high shutter speed. If you severely crop that will also in effect manigny any shake because in effect you are increasing the focal length. In some cases these...

Eradicating Grey Squirrels - the natural way. Monbiot article

One thing to look at is the Pine Martens in Ireland are they better adapted to deal with the Greys than Pine Martens on the "main land". A problem is the UK is many people see the greys as being cute and cuddly .. and yes I know hand feeding them has been mentioned and it doubtless does...

    More madness on Malta

I am actually retired and I refuse to take the statins or the blood pressure tablets. I do see your argument here Alf, I see the same argument for the young Briton, old fogies clinging often with a very poor quality of life, other old fogies (who are actually well provided for) doing jobs that...

    More madness on Malta

We still have the issue of "hunting with dogs" in the UK to deal with. I don't mean intentional hunting with dogs, what I mean is people turning their dogs loose in areas where there are ground nesting birds. There is little point in stopping the Maltese ritual wild bird slaughter if we are only...

    UK butterflies 2014

OCD Collector types will be checking everywhere including here, in fact they might be more likely to check places such as here first. The basic truth is that so far as searching for location information they will at least as dilligent as anyone wishing to simply see or photograph a something out...

    Crows intelligence

I remember seeing a Jackdaw a couple years back. It was watching a white butterfly which was fluttering to and fro. The jackdaw made no move to catch the butterfly, it just stood there on the ground closely following the butterfly's movements, my impression was of it having a childlike sense of...

    Unusual weather in UK

I bit harsh on Lord (or is it "Lard") Lawson, he has got considerable expertise in bulls54itin* and scaremongering people into being a afraid to face the basic truth that regardeless of the causes of climate, climate change is happening and we are are going tohave to adapt to it and some of the...
