    What makes a bird "rare"?

Also note that the eBird filters are a fixed number threshold. They don't take into account if you've been counting for 5 minutes or 5 hours, 50 meters or 50 kilometers - it's the same threshold for all.

    Volcano watch

I would also imagine they like to ride the rising warm air. There's no reason they wouldn't like the caldera. There are roughly a dozen other bird species living in there alongside them without any problem. There are some people with sensitive respiratory systems who make a big deal about the...

    Volcano watch

They also use other pit craters of various size in that region, not just the caldera. They like cliffs, and the craters provide those. Cruising to the upper regions of Kilauea is a short flight compared to some other sea birds that fly up to nest above 8000 feet elevation on Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea...

    Hawaii bird

Actually, they are present on most of the major islands now. (Unless the Maui reports are an unusual hoax) So far Hawaii Island is the notable exception, but probably not forever.

It seems like hawaii creeper changes genus every other year.

House Passes Provision to End All Migratory Bird Protections in the United States

Money is only one aspect of it. They also (usually) need party support. They also need "political base" votes. They also need some minimum of general election votes. So the answer is all the above. But in this case my suspicion is that all of those groups are satisfied.

House Passes Provision to End All Migratory Bird Protections in the United States

It says Duncan is a Republican Representative from South Carolina, so Republicans in his district in South Carolina are who he's presumably "working for". That being the case, I suspect most of them are pretty happy with this.

    Pocket cameras

Thanks, I ordered a refurb'd S110 from Canon. Hoping I'll start taking lots of snail and bug photos with it. Have you tried the HF-DC2 flash with yours?

    Pocket cameras

I was thinking of getting a simple compact pocket camera like a Canon S120 for quickly documenting small plants, insects and snails, but it seems that this sensible model line ends at the S120, and that Canon replaced it with other model lines that aren't quite equivalent? So, for anyone in...

House Passes Provision to End All Migratory Bird Protections in the United States

Huge exaggeration there. If "a migratory bird" is accidentally killed by my rooftop solar panels (or window or car grill etc) I don't see much chance of suffering a felony conviction. Change "a migratory bird" to "tens of thousands of migratory birds" and it's much harder to be sympathetic to...

Logbooks - What Are The Options

Rite In The Rain is the standard for field notebooks, IME. Comes in many sizes and formats. They aren't as durable as they could be, but the only intention is to provide an all-weather writing surface. They tend to get a bit "fuzzy" around the edges with use, but that's better than the "pulp...

Question on odd problem with my Zen Rays

Thanks to everyone here for the input. After bird survey season ended I sent them back to Zen-Ray, who resolved the issue.

Warning About Zen Ray for International Buyers

Even legitimate e-mails often disappear into "spam filters". At work our spam filters occasionally block e-mails from our own co-workers! Give him a chance via PM, at least.

    The Birdingpal web site

The address that they e-mailed me from was "contactpalsorg" at gmail - maybe that will work for you?

    The Birdingpal web site

Eventually one of the users complained and someone from the site e-mailed me through normal e-mail. I was able to get some information in my profile changed. I suspect my e-mails to the admin via their messenging system weren't getting through.

    Nebraska 2015

Dunno, in late November I generally find them in the same brushy/weedy areas I find similar things like other sparrows, goldfinch and junco. Sometimes I have to stalk them in tall weeds, grasses or reeds. Study their tseet and jingly calls on xeno-canto.org etc before looking for them...

    Counting Introduced Species - World

(pardon my CAPS - trying to add emphasis) When I say "hidden" I do MEAN "invalidate". (which does NOT mean "dismissed") They are the SAME thing, because the only way to hide birds from the public output is to mark them "not valid". It is a simple binary flag in the database ("valid" or...

    Counting Introduced Species - World

This is a subject of much misunderstanding. The reviewers are given reviewing guidelines by eBird, which they are supposed to follow. These guidelines require reviewers to hide (not "dismiss") most non-naturalized introduced species from the public output. This is the policy of the eBird...

    Enchanted Lake Bird Sanctuary (Oahu)?

The birds listed are all common wild species, so there's no particular reason to suspect they're caged. It's adjacent to or part of Kaelepulu Pond wetland in a residential development - you might find more information under that name. The web site for it is here...

    The Birdingpal web site

What irked me is that most people really weren't interested in information, suggestions, asking questions or exploring on their own. If I wasn't going to give them a free tour and transportation they went silent. Crickets. I originally signed up with birdingpal to share information about the...
