    Thank you Tom.

    Hobby alarm call?

I recorded this when nocmigging from the garden last Sunday. At first I thought it was a Kestrel's alarm call but now wonder if it's a Hobby - Hobbies nested in the wood beside the house a few years ago. Any comments would be appreciated.

    Flint Point, Shotton & Chester

Ahh, my bad Denzil. I'd thought you were simply assuming there were four birds present because four birds had turned up at BMW. That's the usual pattern - all rare birds seen on the Dee eventually turn up at Shotton . . . even if no-one - apart from yourself of course - actually sees them...

    Flint Point, Shotton & Chester

Hi Denzil, Seems a long way to commute, certainly as it's far from a continuous phragmites bed from BWM to Shotton. In fact it 3km's across arable fields, salt marsh and industrial estate. I wonder what would possess Beardies to fly there and back? You're right though, the lack of anyone to...

So are you suggesting that the Beardies at BMW are commuting between there and Shotton Denzil?

    Polecats

Polecats must be relatively common in the M56/A494 area judging from the number of corpses I've seen by the roadside in the last several years. I suspect the population was originally a mixture of truly wild Polecats and domestic stock but after many generations bred in the wild I imagine they'd...

    Nearest site for winter geese

The Wirral? Brent can usually be seen off Red Rocks, Pinkfeet on the marsh from Parkgate to Burton Point. It's been a poor year for other species of geese - just a few Euro Whitefronts. Shorties have been a little elusive recently but there's a good chance from Denhall Quay (The Harp) or Denhall...

Status of Pheasants in the UK

There is a small, and probably diminishing, number of wild Pheasant shoots in the UK where no birds are reared. Whilst populations are kept reasonably high by predator control, habitat management and winter feeding, numbers shot can't compare to large scale reared shoots. Of course, there's...

Any idea who else has seen this bird Denzil, or whereabouts on the marsh it was seen, no-one seems to know? Jonathan

Argyll and Bute - Seil Island/Oban

Try Scamadale. Golden and Sea eagle, occasional Hen harrier, Dippers, sometimes divers on the loch, Goosander, etc. The pine wood at the end of the valley can hold Crossbills, etc. and is good for Spotted flycatchers later in the year. http://streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=184294&Y=719840&A=Y&Z=120...

Survival of Common Pheasant in the UK

Thirty years ago 'wild' pheasant shoots weren't particularly uncommon - that's a shoot that relies upon a wild breeding stock rather than hand-reared birds. To practise this however, stringent predator control would take place, though on the plus side habitat management would be far better for...

Golden Eagles in the Lake district

I believe at least two pairs bred in the Lakes this year (broods of two and three rung and tagged). One theory as to why the kites haven't done as well as in other release areas is that no feeding station was set up for them, as they were at the other releases. I used to see kites regularly...

Fireworks and birds and other wildlife

A lot of gun dogs 'fail' because their owners don't know how to train them, dogs aren't born gun-shy. Getting pups used to a gun firing is fairly easy, but then that's going to be part of a gun dogs training. Different with fireworks and your average pet dog, most owners don't attempt to train...

    Argyll trip advice

Don't know Cowal at all, more familiar with Mid Argyll and Kintyre, but this may help: http://argyllbirdclub.org/?page_id=103 There are some excellent spots on Kintyre for divers, Slav grebes, scoter, geese, etc. if you wanted to catch the Portavadie-Tarbert ferry.

    Twelve targets for 2016

Your two boys are a credit to you James, so well behaved, and great to see kids so interested - I was at BMW this afternoon. Had you walked around to the LE owl spot you would have almost certainly seen some Fieldfare, they've been regular in the sheep fields above the footpath recently. Sure...

100000 Woodcock shot every year in the UK

Knowing where the best roding sites are is a case of going out at the right time, they're certainly not uncommon in your area Pranticol, but they can be difficult to find if you're not familiar with the habitat they favour. In South Cumbria try Roudsea, Holker Moss, Meathop Moss, Fowlshaw Moss...

What is the best camouflage jacket (& trousers) that money can buy?

Have a look at Rivers West. Many wildfowlers - who know a little bit about keeping dry - recommend their jackets. Their Eider jacket seems to be the coat of choice, though their poncho looks handy as you could store it in a bag for when needed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fz9qRZxfG1U...

    Vanity Publishing . . . ??

If you're familiar with Publisher then that might be the best option but personally, I wouldn't use it. I often get artwork sent to me as Publisher files, don't find it easy to work with at all. If you want to use professional software, depending on how old your operating system is, you can get...

    Lion slaughtered by "hunter"

As far as I'm aware wolves aren't present throughout Minnesota, around half the state is inhabited. So RudeRat's claim that "in the area of Minnesota that has wolves, hunters take 58,000 deer and wolves take 46,000 on average" sounds about right. 140,000 deer were harvested in Minnesota in 2014...

    Lion slaughtered by "hunter"

That's interesting. I always assumed the main reason animals became extinct was through habitat destruction. Out of interest, can you tell me what the last five species of animals made extinct by trophy hunters are, say within the last 100 years? Pyrenean Ibex perhaps? Bubal Hartebeest? I think...
