    Little Grebe montage

I had been sitting on the edge of the lake for about two hours before capturing this lucky sequence of shots. The camera was mounted on a tripod but using a X2 extender on the 100-400 zoom meant that auto focusing was impossible and constant manual minor adjustments were necessary between the shots.

    White-headed Mousebird

So called because of their habit of scampering mouse-like along tree branches (as shown here). Good climbers using bill & feet for purchase. Diet is mainly berries & fruit. Common in Nairobi parks & gardens.

Hi GarethH - upon further analysis & checking other photos from this location, I believe that you are correct & that it is a Ruppell's Griffon Vulture (Gyps Rueppellii). Thanks very much for your comment. Digishooter - you were also correct re the fast moving flood. Refer also to the...

    Secretary Bird

These impressive birds seek out their prey on the ground walking up to 20 km a day in the process. Snakes are a favourite meal (as their scientific name implies). Prey is killed by first jumping up & down on it, & then, once stunned, completing the job by a stabbing action of its...

    Tawny Eagle

The safari vehicle drivers are also trained naturalists. It would be impossible to remember the name of every bird & so I noted them all down as we proceeded. The plummage of the Tawny Eagle varies considerably from dark brown to almost white. They are famous for raiding Weaver colonies.

Marabou Storks - the bigger picture

Annually, in July & August, approx 1.5 million wildebeest migrate from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara in Kenya. Their final hurdle is to cross the river Mara. Unfortunately, in 2007, their arrival coincided with heavy rainfalls resulting in a very swollen and fast moving river. This, combined...

    Marabou Storks at lunch

The Marabou stork has a varied diet which includes snakes, fish and other aquatic creatures. However they are also scavengers and are often seen (as in this shot) sharing the dining table with vultures. If you look closely (just to the right of middle) the shot does include a single White-backed...
