Great Blue Heron, up and away

Another in flight of the Great Blue I posted yesterday. I've never quite mastered the technique of in flight shots. When I finally get one I brag, hence two from a sequence of several nailed shots of this heron.

The head turned backwards seemed funny to me. I know many birds can do that, but never got a picture of one turned180 degrees before. Actually a friend of mine accused me of "Photoshopping" it. I figured it was worth a little joke, I guess it was too little.

Yes, getting close is infrequent. But in this preserve all the birds have experienced pedestrian traffic and are less skittish. The have a much smaller comfort zone they maintain between themselves nad people. This pair was reasing on the branches of a dead tree frequented by woodpeckers. I only...

Yes, Rose, they do. Also, many wildlife preserves provide nesting boxes for Wood Ducks. These were not nesting in this tree. They appeared to be just reasing.

    Wood Ducks

Taken at the farthest reach of my walk around lens. Not the sharpest, but the color is good. It took some post processing work to balance out the exposure.

    Eastern Bluebird

It isn't officially spring until I see a Blue Bird. This year spring came on Friday, May 13th. It was not an unlucky day.

    Northern Flicker, Tree Swallow

Working at the far limit of my walk around lens is a test of good luck and determination. Both had a hand in this shot. The flicker was enlarging this hole while I fired away trying to get a sharp result of the whole bird. After 20 or thirty tries I did. All the rest were failures. A tree...

    Red-shouldered Hawk

Sometimes everything works a it's suposed to, as in the case of this Red-shouldered Hawk who surprised me while on a wild flower walk. I've always believed the best way to look is up, and I'm glad I did when I saw the shadow of this fellow while standing in a clearing among an amazing and...

I just wish it had decided to display its spread wings in front of a more attractive background, but I guess you have to take them as you get them. I'm handy with photoshop, but I'll resist the temptation to tamper.
