Kenya rolls out poison in bid to cull a million crows

I believe I know where John is coming from. There is a growing mistrust in "safety" claims made about chemicals and products. 3M and DuPont lied for decades about its internal findings about its chemical PFAS...and now face clean-up and lawsuits that could land in the $10 billion (US) range...

    From my Manhattan Window

I am amazed at the variety of birds you have identified just from your window. The thrushes around here (Atlanta, GA) always seem to play hide-and-seek. The Northern Flicker likes to eat ants and other small "bugs"...the reason for the ground foraging. Cheers.

Did I really see several Tri Colored Herons at Uncle Tims Bridge , Wellfleet , MA?

No worries, hgee. I applaud you for birding abroad. If I ever birded abroad, probably 50% of my sighting would be followed with a question mark!

    Sparrowhawk on my balcony

Great picture, Bianca. The eyebrows are a nice touch! Yes...they all get smart to each others "games" and adapt. Your Sparrowhawk is also making the local smaller birds a stronger grouping by catching the ones that are less wary or slower...leaving the best ones to pass their genes onto...

Did I see a Red headed Woodpecker outside Bennington , VT?

I concede, Valery. The Red-bellied do have the white rump. Not nearly as clean or distinct as the Red-headed...but an identifiable white rump. I'll change my vote to coin flip for the Red-bellied or the Red-headed. Hgee...seems you'll need to make another trip over here and make sure to see...

Kenya rolls out poison in bid to cull a million crows

First...reminds me a bit of the effort of the Chinese government in 1958 with the Smash Sparrows campaign. That didn't end well. Second...that this is an introduced species. Well, give it a try? I'm sure it will fail as it seems the smaller and/or more adaptable the species, the lower the...

Did I really see several Tri Colored Herons at Uncle Tims Bridge , Wellfleet , MA?

There are essentially two herons/egrets further up the east coast of the US...The Great Blue Heron and the Green Heron. Very less common is the White Egret and Snowy Egret. A single Tricolored Heron in MA would be cause for rare bird alert with people driving from hours around to catch a...

    Maryland USA Hawk

The heavy banding on the belly and chest leads me away from a Red-Tailed Hawk (which adult and juvenile display more of the "belly band"). The size, heavy "generalized" banding, location, and time of year puts my vote as a juvenile Red-Shouldered Hawk.

Did I see a Red headed Woodpecker outside Bennington , VT?

The white rump is a rather distinctive mark of the Red-headed. Most woodpeckers over here have white bellies, but not white rumps. The mention that it overflew your car and you still saw a lot of red leads me again to the Red-headed. It's like they wear a bright red balaclava all the way down...

    Sparrowhawk on my balcony

Pyrtle and Kits are spot on. Keep feeding your smaller birds and do what you can reasonably do to "protect" them. You love birds and that food for the smaller birds will increase their fledge rate and will more than make up for the losses to a hawk. Also, with so many birds coming to your...
