Very busy at the bird feeder today!

The goldfinches I get seem to be quite fussy 😅 I had sunflower hearts out for quite a while and they never turned up! Was only when I put nyger out they came. That was in the summer months though so maybe it will be different in autumn/winter.

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

Would a greenfinch also take nyger? Is there anything they’re particularly fond of? Does it follow that if goldfinch are in the area greenfinch are too? I’ve got long tailed tits and goldcrests in the trees at the end of the road id love to entice into my garden.

Any point putting out niger seed?

Update. I now have anywhere between 4 and 14 goldfinches on my feeding station these days! I’ve had to buy additional feeders to give them all a chance of some nyger! They absolutely love it! I’m so happy! Today when I was walking back from the shops I heard long tailed tits and gold rests in...

    Yorkshire Birding

Not that anyone will be that fussed now I imagine as this post was 2 years ago. But an underpass has now been installed where the former level crossing was. It’s round the corner from my mum and dad’s house.

    RSPB Frampton Marsh

Heading here in October as part of the carsington water bird club trip. Reading its webpage and this thread I’m in for a fantastic time! Marsh harrier and owls alongside some waders I’ve never seen before! Can’t wait!

    Finches Friend feeders

The only thing I’ve changed with regards the feeders is put meal worms in the tube feeder and the small bird feeder. That seems to have attracted an absolutely army of Starlings along with several Pied wagtail, a magpie and wood pigeon. The addition of a nice tree and some colourful plants...

This may be controversial or offensive to some.

I’m asking for places where you can feed birds weighing about the same as a sheet of paper mate. Not to go and stick my daughter’s head in the jaws of an alligator. Not sure how you’ve made such a jump! The best way to get people excited and interested in nature is surely to go and experience...

This may be controversial or offensive to some.

But does anyone know or could recommend sites in the East Midlands where small birds happily come down and perch in your hand to feed from? I remember years ago going with friends family to somewhere in the Derbyshire dales where there were a number of Robins/tits/finches coming down and eating...

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

I highly doubt it. Starmer was pretty clear about that months before the election.

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

I was wondering this on the way down actually… There’s still work being carried out on an enormous span bridge just past Burton on Trent that I know was supposedly part of HS2. But given the line north of Birmingham is canned now surely the threat of places like Middleton lakes being lost...

Birding on the Run - Any other combo hobbyist out there?

In the UK you’re often taking your life in your hands if you start becoming distracted whilst out running. Eyes front and focussed is the best way to ensure you don’t get wiped out by a passing deliveroo e scooter rider. Trail runs and nature reserve laps are a great way of combining the two...

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

Any hide on any reserve could be a target for vandalism. But a well made brick built hide would reduce the chances of it becoming vandalised. Besides. Given its location miles from any sort of domestic dwelling let alone an area with youths running amok, that would be a really committed act of...

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

It’s a nice reserve, no doubt about its value to the birds. But on a wider point if the RSPB want to maximise the income they bring in from these places it could certainly do with an upgrade on its facilities for the paying visitors. Although I think I’ve been spoilt by what’s on offer at...

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

I thought I walked all the way around the loop of both gravel pits and didn’t see a hide but I’ve obviously missed it.

Where abouts is the hide Julie? I did the walk from the car park to the gravel pits at the woodland walk via the meadow trail and never saw one hide! The cafe at Middleton courtyard is only open Wednesday to Sunday I’m afraid. Didn’t have any maps available just the usual waypoint markers at...

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

I had a run down here today and had a lovely time! It does need pointing out that to get to the main bird watching areas of the woodland walk it’s a not insignificant trek. On the way there it was fairly quiet apart from at the feeders near the car park which had attracted Great Tits/...

    Sandwell Valley

I’m going to have a trip to Sandwell Valley either tomorrow or Wednesday depending on weather (forecast atrocious) is there anything particularly interesting there just now? I’d love to see some raptors, nuthatches/tree creepers/any unusual finches!!??

    Birding In The Outer Hebrides

Where abouts and on what dates were they mate? If I was going to go I’d probably be heading to stornoway so I can treat myself to some of the amazing black pudding they do!

    Birding In The Outer Hebrides

I’ve just had a look and whilst I wouldn’t say there’s plenty of options there are some. But given it’s a very rural and isolated place that is of course to be expected. Given the lack of options I guess some of the prices are to be expected. Even if you were to book into some of the cheaper...

    Birding In The Outer Hebrides

How do you arrange a trip to the outer Hebrides? What are the ferry companies who serve there? I don’t imagine there are many Hebridean hotels on Trivago so how do you find accommodation? I’d love a few days birding there but totally unsure how to organise such a trip.

A bird of prey in the tower hide at Attenborough.

I did say in the post where I’ve added the cropped video there was a distinctive reddish undertail. I should have specified that in my opening comment! Thanks for yours and everyone else’s help!

Is it likely or improbable or somewhere in between I saw a short eared owl at Attenborough nature reserve in Nottinghamshire today?

There is a bittern at Attenborough just now actually! And most likely viewed from the tower hide which is where I do most my birding from. I’ll do my best to get a photo of it next time I’m there!

A bird of prey in the tower hide at Attenborough.

If someone wants me to email them the whole video I’m happy to do so. I’m always going to be indebted to anyone who offers possible identification to me. And even conflicting opinions are valuable to me. I will say though that a hobby would definitely match what I saw through the binoculars...
