    Bins with longer eye relief

JB, you're going to have to go try them out. It very much depends on your individual face structure and how far out your glasses sit. I have three set of Nikon bins, and only one has adequate eye relief for me - the Monarch 7 (predecessor to the M7.) The EDG and MHG bins have recessed...

Nice bins, but I'm intrigued by your microscope!

    Sound recording setup for travel

I get reasonably good recordings with a Rode VideoMic Me plugged into my Pixel phone (8 Pro at present), using the RecForge II app. The fidelity isn't as good as my Zoom H5 and SGH-6 combo, but the form factor is great for travel.

    SONY DSC HX400V 50X ZOOM

You could try this. YouTube is a good source, if used selectively.

Settings for Olympus LS-P1 voice recorder help

Jon, I often contemplate using the 96 kHz sampling rate, but then I realize my microphone's listed frequency response range doesn't go up to 48 kHz, so I've always stuck with 48 kHz sampling.

Scopack Plus vs. Viking S'Port Tripod Backpack

Hi HB, I can't exactly answer your question - I've only had the old version of the ScoPac, and the newer Mulepac from Cley Spy, via Seattle Audubon, or whatever they're called now. They all connect to your tripod the same way, as shown in your picture. They take some getting used to, but when...

Merlin App Identification reliable ? South County Dublin regularly identified birds

Merlin needs really good signal-to-noise ratio to identify the bird. Remember, it's analyzing the spectrogram in 3 second chunks, not the audio directly. A distant bird in a quiet setting will be more easily identified than one gull in a cacophony because of the better SNR. Check Merlin's...

    Nikon Z 600MM F/4 S T/C Lens ..!

That's a stunning set-up! Do you post photos of birds taken with this? I'd love to see what's this system is capable of!

Exactly. That's what the original question was about.

Leaving optical gear to charities in wills.

For anyone in the US, optics may be donated to the American Birding Association. They have a program to share optics with birders in other countries. Seems to be mostly the neo-tropics? More info here: Birders' Exchange - American Birding Association

Uhhh, why would you attach the base of your camera to the base of your scope?

    wiping your eyepiece... with what?

Get a retractable lens brush. It's the size of tube of lipstick, and cheap as chips. This and a micro-fiber cloth is all you need in the field. Micro-fiber cloths that tuck into a neoprene bag.

    old nikon scopes

This thread reminded me of my similar scope, a 20x RA II, on a shoulder mount. Very useful for hiking to a hawk watch, easily accessible when one doesn't want to carry the big scope on a tripod. The whole kit cost about 300 USD about 20 years ago. Serves me well to this day, and was invaluable...

How do you carry your binoculars?

Rick Young offers a "binocular connection strap" for $5 USD. Tough but flexible plastic, eliminating the metal on metal problem. I've been using it for years on my SF and MHG bins with no problems, and no visible wear.

Started using Merlin's Sound ID, holy smokes it's a game changer

Merlin is only as good as the recordings that are in the Macaulay Library at Cornell. Not all songs and calls of all species are in there. Cornell relies on a group of staff and Volunteers to curate and annotate the recordings to make them ready for machine learning. The process is done in...

Wren ID needed from Central Arkansas

Given the extensive streaking on the back, and limited eyebrow, I'd go with sedge. Merlin will give you pictures to help with an ID.

Which terns are these? South Padre Island flats, Texas, USA

Rivergirl, if you have any North American bird guides, book or app, Cabot's will be referred to as Sandwich. As aeshna5 mentioned, that may change here in NA in the future.

    Crane, Heron, Egret?

Great Egret is the Clements/AOS/ABA term. Sorry, solindave, you may not want to go down that taxonomic rabbit-hole! ;)
