    Ah ok, thanks

    Raptor, Algarve Portugal today

Would expect this to be a Short Toed Snake Eagle based on location, and the fact that we are a bit late for migrants. But posting for confirmation because I'm not sure

    Tanzania end of September

Ah, so are there two Hamerkops? One on the bank and one in the water? One seems considerably darker than the other.

    Tanzania end of September

Sorry the first two pics are in the wrong order - when referring to first pic, I mean the second, and vice versa. Sorry.

    Tanzania end of September

This ones a bit off patch for me. My son and daughter-in-law have just returned from Safari in Tanzania, and are assembling their ticklist of birds and animals (as one does). They aren't birdwatchers, although the interest they are showing in this gives me hope that they now may be!! I've had a...

    Algarve Shearwater

Taken from Carrapateira, West Algarve coast, yesterday. Sincere apologies for the quality of the pictures, but the birds were some way off shore. There were quite a few Balearic shearwaters around but the bird in the first five photos (all the same bird) looked much whiter underneath (the 6th...

    More Algarve Seawatching

No "dusky" Shearwaters this time! Phew. Taken yesterday at Pontal da Carrapateira. First thought was Ringed Plovers, but not sure there's enough head markings, so probably favouring Dunlins. There is some variation in head pattern and wing bars so I think there may be more than one species...

    Algarve Seawatching

The photo posted is original, and only cropped, not edited in any way. There were actually two birds, my impression at the time was that they looked darker (but then cameras only take what we see, so thats not surprising). I only managed to get one shot and then lost them, it was very windy and...

    Algarve Seawatching

So as per previous comment, I do not believe this is just lighting. It was a clear day, cloudless sky, sun behind me, clear line of sightr, and out of 568 photos taken, none were 'blacked out' in the way this would have to be. Not even close. However I remain sceptical. But I was hoping...

    Algarve Seawatching

I think we'll never know - I share the scepticism, however - I fired off over 500 photos (the wonders of digital photography), and this is literally the only one that has a dark bird on it. It's either a Sooty Shearwater, or a camera aberration..........

    Algarve Seawatching

Yes I wondered that - but as a comparator this is a Cory's taken 3 minutes beforehand in the same place.

    Algarve Seawatching

Taken this morning at Pontal da Carrapateira. Took this single photo of an apparently uniformly dark shearwater - so thinking Sooty Shearwater. There were lots of Cory's Shearwaters and a few Balearic - all of which showed a much paler back with markings, and taken in the same light as this one...

    Farne Islands, Northumberland, today

Looks like a Ruddy Shelduck. Bit surprised to see one here so posting for confirmation?

    Algarve Shearwater

Just finished going through the rest of the photos from this morning. Took a photo later of a Cory's from a similar angle which makes for an interesting comparison. Sorry, maybe should've posted at the same time. Same photo as previously posted is reposted alongside for comparison.

    Algarve Shearwater

Thanks everyone, will go with Scopoli's

    Algarve Shearwater

Taken this morning off Carrapateira, Western Algarve. I assumed this to be Cory's Shearwater but seems to have white webs on the inner primaries and also seems quite clean underwings. So might this be Scopoli's?

    Algarve Lark

The reason I posted the first pic was that it was more side on. The second two, have the face tilted away somewhat, which would make the bill appear shorter. Given the location, I would expect Thekla. My reason for putting it up, was that in the field it seemed to exhibit a more crested feel -...

    Algarve Lark

Not sure if these show anything much different, other than the bill is closed.

    Algarve Lark

Taken at Vale Santo, near Cape St. Vincent two days ago. Thekla's Lark is by far the most common lark there - but Crested Larks seem to be very rare in this particular location. This one looks like Crested to me - longer bill with a straight lower mandible. But as it is unusual, am posting for...

Cook Strait New Zealand, 6th March

From a recent holiday - well off patch for me so working from a Guidebook. Initial thought Sooty Shearwater, but bill too pale? So maybe Flesh footed Shearwater, but no evidence of flesh coloured feet. So maybe Westland Petrel? Stuck. Assistance appreciated.

    New Zealand Shearwater

That's great thanks, will go with Fluttering 👍

    New Zealand Shearwater

Taken off the ferry near Picton yesterday. Saw what looked like a Shearwater among a group of red billed gulls. Suspect Huttons or Fluttering. Help appreciated. Have included a pic with gulls in for size comparison

    Paihia, New Zealand today

Here is a pic of the same bird with what I believe is an ACD?

    Paihia, New Zealand today

I assumed this was an African Collared Dove but lack of neck ring, and peculiar beak shape leaves me pondering. Also looked a little smaller than the other AFD feeding nearby. Any thoughts?
