    Gitzo GHF2W pan screw working loose

    I had that problem with mine. I wrapped a thick elastic band around the outer knob so that it would result in friction with the outer knob and reduce the risk of it unscrewing completely. It reduced the frequncy of the knob becoming unscrewed but I still had to keep an eye on it.

    And Black-necked Grebe (grebe with a black neck) I struggle with the names Horned and Eared Grebes because I can never remember which one is which. At least one of the Black-necked Slavonian pair is informative about the bird's appearance.

    Thanks Lou, I was hoping you'd comment. The main feature I was uncertain about are the relatively broad white fringes on the tips of the tertials. Are these within the normal range for 1cy Caspian?

    I saw this gull on the coast of Suffolk, UK, earlier today. My impression is that it has at least a few features of a first winter Caspian but there are one or two features I'm not sure about. I'm nobody's gull expert so I'd appreciate the views of more expert gull watchers on this bird.

    Bird of Prey identification - Harlow, Essex

    I just tried playing Red-tailed hawk calls to see what they sound like and to my ear teh call was very similar to that of Commom Buzzard which is much more likely to occur in Essex and would be a much better starting point for your mystery raptor.
