There's been a cuckoo in the area for about a weeek and a half now. Most reliable place to catch sight of it is around the first farm on the left just after leaving Barden Bridge heading for the Strid. Look in the tall tree just by the farm house it perches in the very top branches. Its distant...

Incredible sight at Shaw Cross (between Harrogate and Harewood) this morning. The farmer was cutting hay and there was at least 25 red kites soaring around that one field. I say at least 25, I think there was more but so hard to count when they are swirling around. I dont know what they were...

This might be a stupid question but because I'm a technophobe I need a bit of advice. Is there anywhere to convert ordnance survey references into grid references (north & westings). Some people when giving advice put the OS reference eg PT123456. Or does that go into a standard tomtom sat-nav...

Fooled a lot of people though. As I say I'm not a big fan of gulls and only trust myself with the glaringly obvious ones. At the time I saw it everyone who was there was happy with it. Probably knew no more than me. You have to be sure with these things to count them or it eats at you.

When I saw it there was another six guys there. It was stood still square on in the water for ages and everybody had no doubt it was Caspian. I hate gulls and took the other guys opinion for granted because they seemed far more clued up on what a 2nd summer Caspian Gull should look like than me...

    Yorkshire Birding

If I may throw my two-pennorth into the farming discussion what I think the problem with the falling numbers of farm birds is this. When compairing the changes in agricultural practices over the centuries, and farming had been evolving for centuries, up until the second half of the 20th century...
