The new ZEISS Conquest HDX Binoculars - The ideal premium all-rounder

That's the danger of a long train journey combined with a desire to avoid real work!

The new ZEISS Conquest HDX Binoculars - The ideal premium all-rounder

I totally agree with you re Zeiss wishing to maintain points of difference between the ranges. But what I don't understand is why only the 8x42 version (HD or HDX) is so lacking in FOV? If Zeiss wanted to maintain an artificial difference between the ranges then surely they would have...

Does it make sense having a 10x32 and a 10x42 of the same type?

Personally I find the 32mm and 42mm classes of binoculars too similar to want them in the same magnification. Either one can be your "one and done" binoculars, so having both seems a bit unnecessary to me. That's why my current bins are 8x25 (for travel) and 8x42 (for general use) and there...

The new ZEISS Conquest HDX Binoculars - The ideal premium all-rounder

I doubt I'm alone in finding the field of view (FOV) of the 8x42 Conquest HD/X weirdly small compared to its siblings and cousins. For most equivalent sizes the SFL and HD/X models have pretty much the same FOV, with the SF model typically having a a decent amount of extra view. However this...

The new ZEISS Conquest HDX Binoculars - The ideal premium all-rounder

This is a great question. The eyecups on the old version felt very scratchy when being pulled into position and not at all what you'd expect on a premium bin. Sure it didn't affect the viewing, but it still just jarred a bit.

The new ZEISS Conquest HDX Binoculars - The ideal premium all-rounder

Bar weight, the specs look pretty similar to the previous iterations if the data on BH are correct (see links below). Bit of a shame the 8x42 hasn't gained more FOV. On the other hand, the 8x42 seems to have been on a more effective diet than its 8x32 sibling. 8x32 HDX 8x42 HDX

    Opticron Traveler 8x32 BGA ED

That's great news. And it would indeed be brilliant to hear a bit more about them from an Option rep if at all possible

Why are Zeiss so sharp on-axis compared to other binoculars?

It definitely feels like the Conquest line might have been discontinued but do we know for sure?

    Super service from hawke!

Always nice to hear of good customer service! I've never had cause to contact Hawke myself but I have always been pretty impressed by their products (and their warranty).

    Your individual observing quirks?

That's a really good question and I bet will provide some interesting answers. My quirks are a narrow IPD and a nose nicely broken from too much rugby. So I really struggle with wide eyecups. Which is a bit of an issue as wide eyecups seem to be a geometric prerequisite for long eye relief...

Choosing SLC over NL... (Swaro please read)

Even the Habicht I have in the Classified section only needs one finger to focus so that SFL is definitely not right!

Choosing SLC over NL... (Swaro please read)

Since they came out I've tried five or six 8x40 SFLs and they've all had beautifully smooth focussers. So sadly I think that your copy has an issue. However I'm sure Zeiss will fix it for you.

    New to bird watching

Hawke also give IPD as standard and they do make decent binoculars. Wasn't sure if they had a presence in the US but looks like they do: Hawke Optics

    8x32 Dilemma?

I would second this suggestion - they're light and compact, have a very decent field of view and overall are a pleasure to use. The only caveat being to try them in store if at all possible to a) make sure they work for you both as individuals and b) make sure you get a decent pair. I had a...

Cl Companion 8x30 vs. SFL 8x30 vs. ?

I think it's more of a dislike than a hatred. It's an unnecessarily complicated solution to a non-existent problem (for me). Plus the big mounting points just get in the way of my grip. However the dioptre on the CL 8x30b is a hatred. Normally I love Swaro's engineering and yet they somehow...

Cl Companion 8x30 vs. SFL 8x30 vs. ?

For what it's worth I've tried both the old and new CL 8x30. I much preferred the feel of the old version in the hand - it's nicely compact and doesn't use the FieldPro system. However I thought the view through the new one was definitely a step up. The only thing that stopped me buying the new...

    New Conquest models coming ?

In pursuit of lighter weight for the Conquest line, I wonder if it would be enough to simply switch from aluminium to magnesium, or whether the thickness of the chassis would need to be reduced too? Either way, a lighter Conquest with high quality eyecups would be a very welcome upgrade.

    Swarovski Curio prices in London?

They're good guys & gals in the Strand branch and well worth visiting. A word of warning for the OP - last time I was in there they didn't have the Curio in stock. So it would be well worth contacting them ahead of time and asking them to make sure they have a copy in stock.

Swarovski CL new models Wish list

An 8x40 CL to compete with Zeiss SFL would be well received by me. Definitely agree with others that they should leave off the FieldPro system.

    Any suggestions?

Part of your decision might be whether you will be doing any safaris on foot. If you are then I would recommend taking the lightest pair you are comfortable with. Which in this case seems to be the Monarch 8x30.

Having 2 pairs of binoculars. Which would you choose?

Sadly the SFL rubs the bridge of my nose just a bit too much. Didn't stop me trying them a few times trying to convince myself they're fine :ROFLMAO: The NL 32 is right on the borderline of what's ok for me. Totally agree with you re eyecups being absolutely critical. They are the interface...

Having 2 pairs of binoculars. Which would you choose?

Thanks for the suggestion and yes I did indeed. You're absolutely right about the eyecup fitting really well. And I found them a decent bit of kit (albeit with a slightly narrow field of view. However I just couldn't get past the awful design of the dioptre! If they re-designed that feature and...

Having 2 pairs of binoculars. Which would you choose?

Excluding the Habicht I'm currently advertising, I'm firmly in the two pairs camp. One is the Swaro 8x25 CL, which I use when out for a stroll or when weight is an issue - eg walking in the mountains or travel. For their size they have a great view and they're the ones I'd choose if I had to go...

    Opticron Traveler 8x32 BGA ED

Thought I'd give this question a little bump :) The Traveller is a very appealing model but the fit and finish of the three examples I tried when they first came out wasn't brilliant (loose armour, offset dioptre setting etc). An updated version would be most welcome.
  25. C

    CL 8x25 due an upgrade?

I've not had the chance to try the Curios as yet, but I do very much like how the CLs feel like a small but still 'proper' binocular rather than a toy. So it will be interesting to see whether Swaro have managed to keep the Curio as useable for those of us with big hands.
