What did you see in your binoculars today?

I was out watching the beavers again a couple days ago and something unfamiliar flew by way off in the distance. Usually it's red-tailed hawks and turkey vultures in that area. A few minutes later it came back and circled really low overhead for a couple minutes and I realized it was a bald...

    Looking for mid-range 8x32s

Interesting... we definitely watched the same video, but "reasonable torque" didn't budge the eyecups for me on multiple brand new 8x42 M5s and M7s last summer, so I assumed they had started gluing them. Regardless, I definitely agree with you about the plastic threading.

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Do beavers count? I've been watching a lodge for the last six months and it's interesting seeing how they alter the environment around them. They can be hard to spot because they spend so much time sitting in one place. My favourite moment all year was when I saw a blue heron grab something out...

    Looking for mid-range 8x32s

Thank you for the dimensions Steve! After some careful caliper measurements, I would call the M7 eyecups 37.5mm outer diameter with 11.5mm of clearance from the glass at maximum extension (perhaps a smidge under 12mm if I'm really generous). The Viper HD 8x42 which provides a very comfortable...

    Looking for mid-range 8x32s

Whoops, meant to post this earlier but forgot to hit submit: Thank you for asking since it would certainly have been an easy solution, but yes I do realize the eye cups need to be extended |:P| I spent a really long time researching on the forum before posting this thread, and I came across...

    Looking for mid-range 8x32s

The package finally arrived! Upon first impression the Monarch 7 feels significantly smaller and lighter than I was expecting based on the specifications. It's not a "pocket" binocular, but it's extremely unobtrusive compared to even a relatively lightweight and small 8x42 like the Viper HD, and...

    Looking for mid-range 8x32s

Canada Post really doesn't want me to have these binoculars.

    Looking for mid-range 8x32s

I was hoping to spend the weekend testing the Monarch 7, but Canada Post disagreed with that plan so I'll have to wait until Monday. I think just holding and using it for a bit should give me a good idea of whether I'm on the right track. I'm not at all opposed to moving up to the Maven B3 if it...

    Looking for mid-range 8x32s

I was afraid of that! What about the Maven did you prefer? I went ahead and ordered a pair of Monarch 7 from a large retailer before the special pricing ended. That should give me a baseline to decide whether I like the form factor and whether it's worth going for something pricier like the...

    Looking for mid-range 8x32s

It sounds like either the Monarch 7 or Opticron Traveller would work fine for my purposes. Opticron seems to win on warranty as well as having a slightly larger exit pupil and better eye relief, though they have no presence in Canada and only one dealer (Urban Nature Store). Kite and Maven seem...

    Looking for mid-range 8x32s

Thank you for adding your thoughts. I've spent a lot of time on Bird Forum over the last year, and I thought it was time to finally start posting! I realize my question is rather broad; I find when I'm trying to make this type of decision, it's helpful to gather my thoughts together in a post...

    Looking for mid-range 8x32s

My main binoculars are the 2018 Viper HD 8x42. I've been quite happy with them for birding, but I only tend to carry them when I specifically plan to set up and observe somewhere because of the size and weight (today I was watching beavers across a river!). I'm looking for a more compact pair I...

    Tightening the hinge

This is an incredibly basic question, but I couldn't find a Vortex-specific answer in the forum. I have a pair of 8x42 Viper HDs (2018 version), and the hinge is slightly too loose for my taste. Is tightening it just a matter of popping off the tripod mount cap and using the two smaller holes?
