    Safari (and general birding) binocular?

I wouldn't go by the polling though - that is effectively an average view, but you are not an average, you are a specific. The only sure fire way is to try the options as you might find that the optics that poll lowest may suit you best. To the specific question, given the open landscape...

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

No, Ebird only represents one side of the equation! The next IOC update (and there will be two IOC updates before the next Clements one) could move a significant block of the differences. It has been flagged here (ie on one of the taxonomy threads) to expect a block of lumping from IOC. I dont...

    Clements 2024 checklist update

When this split was announced in the most recent IOC list, there was a suggestion that this will be reversed (post 2615, https://www.birdforum.net/threads/latest-ioc-diary-updates.185799/page-131#post-4656304), so perhaps the split being missing from this update is indicitave that the suggestion...

    Pipit vs Skylark

Respectfully, your posts on this (ID) forum look like you want to argue a point and be correct, rather than glean nuggets of wisdom You have been given a lot of very good advice on this thread by birders with, it would appear, vastly more experience than you have of birding and you choose to...

    Pipit vs Skylark

You are not reading what I write - I said that "Initially, you will not be confident identifying a large percentage" that is because you are learning You say "you won't get field experience if you're not able to ID a bird" - that is fundamentally incorrect - you will not be able to ID every...

    Pipit vs Skylark

..and yet, the birds in these two pictures look nothing like each other and if you got those views, there would be no excuse for identifying the lark as a pipit or the pipit as a lark

    Pipit vs Skylark

THere is no better solution to these conundrums than getting out into the field and birding. As you bird and get experience, you will find that the distinctions like shape size and behaviour become more and more apparent and important so that seeing the plumage characteristics become almost...

    Surfbirds website - down?

It appears that Surfbirds seems to be in the process of being re-designed. I am now getting a different set of pages there, some of which are not (yet?) working

    Steve Wing R.I.P.

So sad to hear this news. Steve was, above all, a gentleman - helpful and respectful in all things and with all people. Among the numerous stays I have done on Cape, one stands out - I was there one early June with my kids, who were quite young and we shared the Obs with just Steve and Mary...

    ebird in China

I think it is very clear from the China EBird dataset that there are many Chinese EBird users, in addition to many non-Chinese submissions. In theory, EBird submission in the app is independent of Googlemaps etc in that Ebird uses phone GPS for positional data/track. The app can be used in...

    ATC or STC?

Angled every time for me - I find looking through an angled scope far more comfortable than the heads up posture required for a Straight through. THis is particularly true if spending decent time sea-watching.

I would say it is certainly worth asking Swarovski for a quote.

Need a new scope setup, what can I get for around £500?

My experience with Swarovski support has been very positive (not a view shared among everyone on here admittedly) and you might consider asking Swarovski would they do a clean on it. I've has optics serviced and returned in perfect nick from them in the past - depending on the cost this may be...

Need a new scope setup, what can I get for around £500?

I'm not sure about availablilty in that price range but would say that if you are seawatching for long periods, my view is that an angled scope will be more comfortable (head down posture more comfortable than head up) and stable (tripod can be lower).
