    It's a young white-cheeked starling. They can vary quite considerably and sometimes even catch one out with regards to identification.

    I would go for a Sparrowhawk. Whilst Goshawks are known to dismember their prey in full view of watchers this bird doesn't look that like a juvenile Goshawk.

    The nightjar looks to be a band-winged female to me. The colouration is not brown enough for a female swallow-tailed.

    I would suggest listening to the three species calls on Xeno Canto. That would be the most reliable way of identifying them. The photo, unfortunately isn't clear enough for a positive ID.

    I use Birds of Japan (Chikara Otani) - Lynx Birdlife Field guides. Brazil's Birds of Japan for Helm is just the Japanese portion of Birds of East Asia. The former is much better.

    Hi Matt Yes the bill is the major factor - there isn't the convex lower mandible visible on Thekla's larks and also the facial features which match the Crested Lark more closely (the eye ring, eye stripe and supercilium). All the best Kandahar

    One could say the choice of perch relates to bird behaviour and bird behaviour is an important factor in identifying the species of bird. That is what my statement was referencing.

    It doesn't look like a Reed Bunting but more like a Cirl. I've seen both in France and I would also say the choice of perch is important. I don't recall seeing reed buntings perching on wires - they're very much in the reeds. Cirl Buntings, however, perch on wires all the time.

    I agree with Grahame - Bull headed shrikes can vary quite surprisingly but the grey back is generally diagnostic.

    I'm thinking they're all Blyth's Reed Warblers. The undertail coverts seem too long for a Booted Warbler and the bill also doesn't look right.

    The whiteness of the wing bars (and the indistinct nature of the upper bar) and supercilium are certainly indicative. Did it call at all?
