    Coyote on the Kennebec

    With yet more snow overnight I set my camera up toward the platform feeder for bird activity, but in the afternoon this coyote came loping by, heading for some ducks near our shore. I understand they are around but I have only seen a few and always like this when they stand out against the snow.

    I believe this is a beautiful Fox Sparrow. Nicely close, too. I'm still waiting to see one here. It was about this date late year that I first saw one.

    I never saw the breast or flanks of this bird but it seems lighter, and the bill seems quite small. Maybe what you can see is not enough to say for sure. We did not get many Redpolls this winter at all. Thank you.

    Since our river is still frozen over April 2! I went looking along a stream I knew was open and found a Hooded Merganser drake swimming along. I followed in the car waiting for a clearer photo opp and then there were 2 drakes for me. The light was not great but it did give the rather nice...

    Thanks, everyone, for the comments. A note about the alligator mom. My husband observed her while 6 babies were aboard. When a heron flew over he thought he heard a grunt and immediately all the babies were off and into the nearby reeds.

    Warmer weather in February brought out the new gator babies at World Birding Center, South Padre Island, Texas. On this day mother had them in a small pond near the boardwalk so watching was easy.

    I have looked for these ducks for 4 visits to S Tx and happened to notice them one morning in a nearby park, in a group of more than 100! They make for very interesting watching, too.

    I usually see this egret at the Birding Center pond on South Padre Island, Tx, and had not this year until today when I found him fishing in Laguna Madre, behaving in the characteristic Reddish Egret manner.

    Black Vulture Landing

    We came upon a roadkill with a Caracara checking it out and as we crept closer this vulture came in to claim it. The Caracara flew to a nearby perch but never challenged the vulture.

    Id S Tx raptor, Los Fresnos, Tx, USA

    We were travelling in S Tx this afternoon and spotted this raptor on a power pole watching a field. I am not at all sure of raptor ids but wonder if this is a Red-tailed because of the darker neck and belly coloration. Thank you.
