    Catching/trapping of moths/butterflies

Thanks for the info. I must say that I find it unconscionable to kill something just to be able to say that you've seen it; "absolute certainty" or not! Imagine if we did that with birds! ;)

    Catching/trapping of moths/butterflies

I'm just curious if trapping moths/butterflies invariably means killing them in the process, or do some/any of them get released? :smoke:

    Laser pointers

So what if you don't get to see a bird ?. Birding is supposed to be an enjoyable hobby, not a selfish practice of extreme vanity. Why is a Water Rail called a Water Rail (serious question)

In answer to your second question. I think it's to do with the sound they make. To rail: is to complain about something in an angry way. :smoke:

    Common Swifts in winter

Saw them again on a couple of occasions and indeed as Nutcracker suggests they are Pallids. They didn't call but the lighter colour was pretty evident. I wonder if their status is changing from a wandering day feeder and becoming closer to being a wintering/resident ??? !.
