Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

I was at Strathbeg yesterday and was lucky enough to "refind" the mystery little wader. Previous views had been obscured by vegetation and very inconclusive, then it came a bit closer and more out in the open. Great debate followed and much consulting of Collins. Was it a Temminck's Stint or...

    New Award Winning Camera Straps

An advert in the current issue of Outdoor Photography caught my eye. It is for a camera strap which basically goes over the left shoulder with the camera hanging on your hip. It appeals to me because I don't like the weight of a camera and heavy lens hanging round my neck when I'm walking...

I'm usually quite good at anagrams, but I guess I don't know my ears from my bowel.

    Intresting Pipit, Sweden

In meadow Pipit, the streaking on the breast often forms into a small smudge. This is what you have here.

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Today I spotted two Ptarmigan from the car park at Glenshee Ski Centre. They were quite high up on the Cairnwell, among the scree patches. Also a few Red Grouse lower down by the road. If anyone is keen to try here, they may need a bit of patience. I sat in the car and watched the slopes for...

    The Highlands and Islands Thread

Plenty bird life in the valleys at the moment, but winter has returned to the high tops this week. This was Lochnagar today, when I was doing some of my tetrads for the BTO survey. Cuckoo, Black and Red Grouse, Common Sandpipers, Wheatears and loads of common stuff.

    "Yellow-Legged" type Gull, Lossiemouth

I struggle with gulls too, but I would have thought the legs were not yellow enough for a YLG.

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Well, that's me back from Norfolk and just about recovered from 6 twelve hour days solid birding. Nightingales singing, 12 Hobbies, 25 Yellow Wagtails, Marsh and Willow Tits, Reed Warblers and a Montagu's Harrier. Has anyone else heard a Cuckoo here this year? My wife heard one last Saturday...

Thank You Norfolk for a Great Week

I spent last week in Norfolk, 6 twelve hour days of solid birding. The main idea was to look for species that are rare or don't occur in my native Aberdeenshire, but also to give my lists a bit of a boost. I managed a total of 113 species, including 7 lifers and 35 for the year list. This was...

Got my first Whimbrel of the year yesterday feeding on the mussel beds at the Ythan estuary. Off to Norfolk tomorrow for a week - hope I don't miss too much here.

    Curlew or Whimbrel? NE Scotland

many thanks everyone. I had thought of flushing it in the hope that it might call. Glad I didn't now.

    Curlew or Whimbrel? NE Scotland

I'm not entirely convinced this is a Whimbrel, what do you think? Taken yesterday in heavy rain at a range of about 100m and heavily cropped, hence the lousy photos. The bird was clearly smaller than adjacent Curlews, the bill looks OK, as do the short legs, but I'd like to see a better defined...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Black-tailed Godwits still at Tarland hide. 40 Pinkfeet flew in and drank lots of water - must be thirsty work flying into a head wind. Loads of Sand Martins at Loch Davan, and a Common Sandpiper on the Dee at Dinnet bridge.
