    Birding at Loch of Kinnordy

the Smew was still there at noon today in front of the east hide, but across on the far side of the loch. It was diving a lot making it quite hard to see.

    Birds fae Torry

The winter plumaged Black Guillemot was still loitering around in Greyhope Bay, and the Red-throated Diver count was into double figures. The Eiders all look like proper Eiders again, the drakes busy tossing their heads back. Couldn't see any with sails. A couple of dolphins had a brief...

    Nikon 78mm

It is an excellent scope. I've had mine for about 5 years and I have no wish to change it for any other. On the odd occasion when I've looked through somebody else's top end scope I've been disappointed. But as has been said, always try before you buy. I'm not sure about getting a stay on...

Yes that was us. I knew I had seen you before somewhere but couldn't remember where. Maybe Kinnordy? I'm glad you got such nice views of the Barred Warbler, and some good photos too. I'd left my camera in the car, stupidly. Ken

    Tayforth Birding

A birthday treat today - the Barred Warbler at Auchmithie put on a good show (eventually) sitting out in the open for a good five minutes. B (: :t:

Balmedie Country Park was also quite good today, in the trees and bushes around the car park. Lots of Goldcrests, Song Thrushes, Blackbirds, Redwings, Stonechats, Reed Buntings, 2 male Blackcaps and a few singing Skylarks. Oh, and a drum and percussion ensemble that suddenly started up and had...

    Tayforth Birding

Today I finally made it to the newish hide overlooking the Tayock Burn (by the railway station). The bushes along the track leading to the hide were alive with Blackbirds, Song Thrushes, Robins, Goldfinches, and I saw my first Redwing of this autumn. Unfortunately it was very misty and...

    Birds fae Torry

I didn't get to the Ness until three o'clock this afternoon. I haven't seen so many Goldcrests for a few years, and there were nearly as many Chiffchaffs. Good numbers of Pied Wagtails and thrushes, and a stonking male Grey Wagtail on the rocks along the north bank. As Mark says, there just...

    Birds fae Torry

I was there too this forenoon and also saw the Lapland Buntings although I couldn't get close enough to photograph them. I also had a quick glimpse of a female Redstart in the Allotments, but there were probably too many plotees at work. I had a nice chat with one of them who said he had seen...

    Kincardineshire: The Mearns and beyond

Today I went to a few places new to me. Firstly, Kinneff Old Church, where I saw a Spotted Flycatcher on top of the church roof, and a Chiffchaff busily tail dipping in a tree by the gate. Then I went to Gourdon, to look for the Great Grey Shrike, but no joy there. The rocky shore backed by a...

    Website Construction

I have used Clikpic for over a year now and find it very satisfactory. Uploading text and photos can be a bit tricky until you get the hang of it, then it becomes very straightforward. At least if you are a computer numptie like me. There are several templates to choose from, a free 14 day...

    Tayforth Birding

I took a walk out to Scurdie Ness this morning, hoping for some Lapland Buntings, but no luck. Like Gus yesterday, saw Wheatear, Pink-feet Geese, Skylarks (actually singing high up), Linnets and pipits. Also saw a couple of Stonechats which was nice, and flocks of Goldfinches. Interestingly...

    Pinkfeet anyone?

7-8000 reported at RSPB Loch of Strathbeg yesterday. Another few thousand today at various places in North East Scotland. Also about 40 Whooper Swans today at Strathbeg.

FAIR ISLE - BIRD/ISLAND NEWS etc!

This is great news for David and Susannah, and I wish them all the best in their new lives on Fair Isle. B (: But I'll miss David's help and chat when he leaves Loch of Strathbeg. Ah well, guess I'll just have to book myself into the obs for a holiday next year. :t:

    What makes a good hide?

The best hide I know of is my car. It's moveable, adaptable, comfortable, and I don't have to share it with anyone if I don't want to. It also plays music quietly and serves food and drink as required.

    Birds fae Torry

I had a look yesterday for the Lapland Buntings but as far as I know I didn't see them. Lots of common stuff going about, a charm of about 100 Goldfinches, lots of Starlings, Swallows, Linnets and Meadow Pipits. And 8 Purple Sandpipers on the Skate's Nose. Meanwhile, Joseph carries out a...

    Rattray

Barred Warbler and Pied Flycatchers reported there today. Now that the wind is more northerly, things could be hotting up.

    Birds fae Torry

Hi Joseph, glad to see you are enjoying your photography. Your photos are pretty good too! I hope you don't mind if I make a suggestion. Your shutter speed of 1/500 sec is really way too slow for birds in flight, or birds in dive. You would obtain a faster speed if you used the camera in...

    Tayforth Birding

This forenoon at The Lurgies, Montrose Basin - Common Crane, Little Egret, Canada Goose and Kingfisher. Also about 10 Greenshanks, but I couldn't find any Green or Common Sandpipers.

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

I tried again, not expecting to see it, so I wasn't disappointed when I didn't. But if I hadn't gone there I would have missed seeing the 4 Spoonbills on the Ythan, at the Snub.

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

I went looking last Tuesday, found the field, not a bird in sight. Which doesn't mean a thing of course knowing me. Might try again today.
