    SX40 Super Zoom

Like I said, I'm not too far off being a novice. Hadn't considered upping the ISO for hi-speed burst! What sort of ISO did you tend to set on average for a noiseless image? EDIT: Actually, how do you do that? I don't seem to have the option to change the ISO in Hi-speed burst or have gotten...

    SX40 Super Zoom

I think we all have our own different ways of doing things. I'm not far short of being a novice myself so try to keep things simple. For my usual 'pull it out and shoot scenario', I'm currently torn between using Scene Mode with the HiQ10fps selection and Tv (selectable shutter speed). As...

    SX40 Super Zoom

A few 'walkabout' shots taken over the weekend. The final shot was taken as part of my quest for half-decent flight shots. I used HiQ 10fps with CHDK overrides using a 1/1000 shutter speed and an aperture of f.8. Could have been better. Not brilliant but getting there.....maybe ;) Andy

That is superb! I'll never look at one of those things in the same way again! BTW, which adapter did you go for in the end? Andy.

    SX40 Super Zoom

Neil, Just out of interest, are you still using the HiQ 10fps Scene mode for the majority of your shots? The reason I ask is that I was slightly put off using that mode because of the lack of user control over shutter speed. As far as I am aware, your only option at 10fps is to let the camera...

    Nikon P510

Hasty snap, 140x zoom, handheld, single shot moderately cleaned from no-nothing wannabe photographer.... Andy.

    SX40 Super Zoom

Looks like the same Hoverfly as mine! A few shots taken not far off sunset. The aggro' Whimbrel's I included on the basis of it being so late in the day, full zoom at 2.0x with a 500 shutter speed and an ISO of 1250 (un-cropped image)! I was pretty surprised that it still maintained a fair...

    SX40 Super Zoom

Well, if your interest is the photography, and you realise that the best camera is the one you have with you, I can see a few domestic disputes breaking out when you try to snatch it back from the wife... ;) If you haven't already done so, check out Monkey Princes Photostream. As well as the...

    SX40 Super Zoom

My apologies Graham. It was intended as general point of order for anyone else on the look-out for one. There are many posts that claim that the SX40 is no good for moving birds and yours unfortunately just happened to be the post that last mentioned it. I only quoted that part as an example...

    SX40 Super Zoom

I'm really sorry but I'm having real trouble swallowing this and it will certainly put a lot of people off when considering what many regard as a really good all-round bridge camera. Sure, a DSLR will probably trump an SX40 with moving birds but only up to a certain point and plenty depends on...

    SX40 Super Zoom

Image quality and a few niggles aside, I think you'd need to lug around a fair bit of kit with a DSLR to match the versatility of a Superzoom for a scoped-up birder. I think I'd sooner be pulling out 810mm of compact Superzoom and capture something reasonable than be restricted to a...

    SX40 Super Zoom

A quick shot taken through the Hoya HMC UV filter. Hand held, full zoom from c.40ft. Can't say that I'm too disappointed with the outcome.... Andy.

    SX40 Super Zoom

In the spirit of proper debate, I have to disagree with the pair of you. It's the far away birds that are the problem, not necessarily the small ones ;) Andy.

If I were you, and you're going to be regularly swapping adapters about, I'd probably go for genuine (or Lensmate). As far as I'm aware, both the Canon & Lensmate adapters are 'plastic'. The Maxima is made from some alloy, possibly aluminium, which may eventually cause some wear on the plastic...

    SX40 Super Zoom

I'm another one in the viewfinder camp with the LCD safely tucked away, face in, until needed. I find the viewfinder, although by no means brilliant, adequate enough to know when something is in, or out of focus which is about all you can really say about it on the plus side. As Roy rightly...

    SX40 Super Zoom

Hmm... Adapter arrived but I'm still in two minds over this filter business. I set the camera up on a tripod out of the wind and took several shots of bits and pieces using full zoom on a 2 second timer to reduce any shake. I studied the images carefully and just when I'd convinced myself...

    SX40 Super Zoom

Just received the Maxsima - 58mm Lens Filter Adapter. Looks pretty well-made (non-plastic) and fits perfectly as stated in the reviews. No graunching on fit or removal, threaded end as smooth as you could hope for. In short, totally satisfied. Andy.

    SX40 Super Zoom

Filter came today but sadly still waiting on the adapter :C I must have looked ridiculous, but in the manner of a trumpet player holding his hat on the end of his trumpet, I conducted a few early tests. The filtered shots actually looked a little better (I kid you not)! I think I'd best wait...

Off the top of my head Roy, I think I've read that it's 0 to 500mm (and hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong).... Andy.

Many thanks for passing on your experiences. I've bitten the bullet and ordered a Hoya 58mm HMC Haze UV Filter out of curiosity if nothing else. Further reading puts the Hoya muti-coated (HMC) filters in fairly high regard in terms of glass quality. There seems to be quite a split when it...

    SX40 Super Zoom

No worries. PM me if you need any more help. All, While I'm here I could use some sound advice. I want to fit a UV filter. Or possibly I did! Done some research and it turns out, quite possibly, that fitting a UV filter to a modern day digital camera is about as much use as a chocolate fire...
