daily delight, lymm UK, garden and nearby reports

We recently moved to a temporary small house. The garden is 6m x 4m, I put out sunflower hearts, fat balls and peanuts. A fortnight ago I put out niger seeds hoping to attract the Bullfinch pair visiting us occasionally, to come a bit closer to the windows. The Bullfinch were ignoring them, as...

    lapwing in south-east uk garden

Popped locally earlier on the route I normally take to work, and saw 50+ Lapwings. Also Fieldfare and Redwings were everywhere.

    Garden Tick Rules

Thought I'd revive this old thread. The purpose of starting it was I was laid up after an operation and wanted to occupy my hours alone in the house. My last thread stated we had another house, well about 7 weeks ago we moved in temporarily whilst waiting for another house to come up for sale in...

    Garden Tick Rules

We have another house, it has a very very small garden, about 6m long by 4m wide. The birds we get in there, is amazing for its size. Backing onto a stream very close to farmland it's alive with birds and hard to keep the feeders full. Typically, 1330 and the feeders are empty

Hi, Press menu, scroll through to the yellow sections, in one of them you will find copyright information in the list of options, there you can enter your name. Ian EDIT Sorry, just-re read your post and saw you already have done this. Have you tried the green section which resets settings ? ? ?

Do the optics greatly improve with the price?

The more you pay, the less of a difference you get. Go to an optics shop and see for yourself. Above £500 and the differences get less and less for the money.

    Garden Tick Rules

Just saw a Jay fly up into the trees from my lawn where he was probably burying his acorn stash. I remembered this thread ( I haven't been on BF for quite sometime ). Shame I've already listed one, but I did have a Tawny Owl calling a few weeks back but as my list is a 'landed list' I haven't...

    Another 7D Mk1 problem

It's a common 7d fault. Most rectify themselves over time, mine took 9 months though. Originally the Canon battery was faulty, I was on holiday and bought a Hahnel one. I charged the battery and it would drain practically overnight. I charged again and left it out overnight and it kept it's...

    They're only Pigeons

Funnily enough I had my dinner in the park today. With this thread in mind I took notice of what was around. Sods law not one pigeon came to beg for food. But, there were gulls instead and I realised that I had never seen any gulls with the same injuries as the pigeons. This despite the fact...

    7D11 vs 5D3 and 1DX

As John posted above, many users of the 5D3/1Dx have the 500/600/800 super teles. In those cases, a FF camera will not be focal length limited and definitely the better alternative. Once you start cropping a FF heavily then the advantage starts go back down the slider in favour of the crops...

    They're only Pigeons

Where I regularly have my dinner in a South Wales park, the minute you sit down about 50 Pigeons fly right at you. There's always one who will literally hover right in you face to get food. This aggressive behaviour wins them no friends, even I as a bird lover get frustrated. You're right...

    Help me find an owl...pleassee

Depending on what type of Owl, search by habitat. A Barn Owl for instance is going to be in a quiet location in, yep, a barn. Go check some barns for pellets as a sign of presence. This time of year Tawney Owls will be calling, learn their different calls and go out listening. Hope that's a...

    D7100 or????

Sounds like the 7D2 if your not too heavily invested in Nikon glass, it's probably the best birders crop around coupled with a 1.4TC 400/5.6 or 100-400 combo

    Bird of prey poisoner sentenced

Having worked in those type of buildings ( I won't name them individually) they are controlled by a bunch of Health & Safety maniacs, who are probably far more worried about putting up a "warning hot water" sign, by a hot tap, than anything out there in the real world. Tick boxing at its very...

    Eagle in the Rhondda ?????

There were reports of a Golden Eagle a few years back in the Garw Valley. Turned out to be an escapee if memory serves me right, so maybe not impossible.........

    Full frame query.

After being on these forums for years I've often heard these terms bandied around. They are NEVER backed up with any scientific side by side controlled tests though. As I posted earlier, under ISO 800 you'd be pushed to notice the difference between a modern crop and FF. When I'm birding my...

    Full frame query.

This is the the crux of FF v crop. People who extol the FF cameras for wildlife photography usually have at least a 500/4 lens. People spending 1Dx money on a body normally have the funding for a super tele. There wont be much difference between the 5D3/7D under ISO 800. Go above that and the...

    New to Macro Help!

Are you using any additional lighting, it's very important with macro to get good depth of field. Also, look into focus stacking, most serious macro shooters use this technique.

Hello! New, but concerned about the birding policeman!

Welcome to Birdforum Michael. Binoculars, I use Minox 8x32's, they cost £350 ish if I remember but you can get 8x32 or 8x42 versions for £200 ish. They are quite scarce in the field but are well regarded by their owners. Don't worry about Lee Evans or any one else, just go out and enjoy...

The sad taming of the Turnstones

But these were turning their back on their usual food source in favour of pasty crumbs, chips and ice cream cone flakes. Do you know what was used as "bait" to lure them ? Sorry I'll qualify aggressive as I meant it. They weren't taking advantage of food waste leftover by people when they left...

The sad taming of the Turnstones

I've just come back from a weeks holiday in Cornwall. I was surprised to see that Turnstones were joining the Seagulls and Starlings aggressive searching for food amongst other holiday goers feet. I literally had eight at one point looking to see if I had dropped any scraps from my ice cream...
