    The Birdingpal web site

One thing that irked me early on about birdingpal is that most people who contacted me were obviously looking for a free guide rather than paying the (well-known) local guides for their time and services. When I respond that I can't guide them but I'd be happy to provide them with plenty of...

Why couldn't a catadioptric or newtonian optical system be used in binoculars?

3:-) I sure wish we had the artwork and tranquility to go along with that image. I think it's more like an old top of the line sailing ship going on a voyage of discovery - a high tech prestige peice, government investment, military spinoffs, everyone thinks it's cool, long periods of...

    conservation of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker

Funding which could have instead helped prevent existing species from becoming extinct. Meanwhile opponents of conservation will enjoy lumping all of us in with the people looking for this Bigfoot on the public dime.

They beg at the kitchen door at halepohaku. Even where hunted they're never particularly shy like quail are.

    conservation of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker

It's too bad we can't be bothered to conserve birds that actually still exist. :/

    The Birdingpal web site

I shouldn't have to send money to get them to change the information posted about me on the site. |:S| I got an e-mail from someone here about 8 months ago talking about some visitor they met who was upset with me for not replying to messages I never received. I imagine there are dozens of...

    The Birdingpal web site

Odd that you got a reply in 2 hours, but I sent 3 or 4 requests for change over the last year and heard nothing and seen no action on my request. Maybe their strange messaging system has a bug causing it to fail for some users?

    First bird of 2015

Red-billed leiothrix...noisy little rascals edit: I just remembered I'm pretty sure I heard the neighborhood barn owl after the neighborhood fireworks tapered off around 1AM.

    The Birdingpal web site

FYI, it appears that the Birdingpal site is no longer maintained. I've been trying to get my defunct e-mail address removed for a year now, and I've never received any replies from the admin or seen any changes.

    NZ De- Extinction!

So you release these fake "de-extincted" birds in the wild...and oops they start spreading new diseases to the natural birds, or maybe they adversely impact some rare plants or insects. There are many potential negatives that will keep these frankenbirds in zoos and labs. The political...

    ...Enemies of the Canadian Government?

I read the article but found no mention of which politicians or political parties were allegedly being directly supported or opposed by the group? (the only action a reasonable person could consider a "political activity")

Comment by 'bkrownd' in media 'Red Lehua Blossom'

This is misidentified. I can't offer any suggestions about what it might actually be, though.

I love how each one claims a lawn as its own, and defends it all day. Even on a busy street corner.

New Video: 'Oma'o singing in the morning (added by Cubbybear1963)

The other singing is from an 'apapane. There is also another 'oma'o answering in the background.

Traditionally IIRC on this site Hawaii has been lumped as part of the "USA" in the "north america" gallery.

    Saddle Road

The pre-dawn low would have been around 50F. Weather looked too dodgy for me to head up there this weekend, after being rain-soaked during my last few outings. Did some needed gardening.
