    The (Painted) Lady invades !

I saw my first Painted Lady of the year this morning in Thetford, always a pleasure to see. In case anyone has managed to miss the news, there was a huge influx of Diamond-backed Moths (Plutella xylostella) into the county last week and there are still many about now. Estimates suggesting...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Trapped a Vestal in my Old Costessey garden last night, easily the highlight of my first 5 months of trapping!

Duck - St. James Park, London

Looks like a Mallard hybrid (farmyard duck), rather than one of the exotics I was expecting from the title given the collection they have at St James' Park!

    Norwich Birding

Certainly a bird I would like to get on my Norwich list! Although I do have it on my London list (at least I would if I kept one!)

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Apparently they can have a partial second generation at this time of year, seemingly the same as the Buff Footman I had 2 night's ago. A Single-dotted Wave last night was another late moth. Seems quite a few species are around late this year...

    Norwich Birding

Out checking the moth trap at 9.45pm when I thought I heard a Sandwich Tern call twice, albeit distantly. Just that slight nagging doubt that I'm going mad is preventing me from "ticking" it!

    Norfolk Dragon/Damselflies reports/news

I'm yet to see Common Hawker in Norfolk and have similar bad luck at Winterton. Earlier in the week I saw a fair few Hawkers there but only 2 perched, both of which were Southern. I watched the Red-backed Shrike scoff a large hawker but was unable to i.d. it, though I haven't properly examined...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Macro moths trapped in my garden (Old Costessey) have reached 162 species now, with Angle Shades and Gold Spot trapped last night (the latter seemingly quite unusual for the Norwich area and will be roosted til 9pm if anyone local wants to pop in to see it). A Peacock on 5th August was another...

    Norfolk Dragon/Damselflies reports/news

Don't know James, I haven't heard of them there but that doesn't mean they haven't been recorded there previously. Significantly for me, I live between the pub and Queens Hills, so it's possible they may find my garden at some point. At 16 species, I'm not sure if there are many other possible...

    Norfolk Dragon/Damselflies reports/news

I hold out hope that they may yet discover my garden pond then!!! Last year there were absolutely loads of Small Red-eyes at Queens Hills, but I haven't looked this year yet...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

I was greeted by a Painted Lady on the buddleia out of my kitchen window this morning, a first for my garden. Off to join the steady stream of viewers for the Silvery Gem shortly...

    Norfolk birding

It's now been put out by RBA as an unconfirmed report, which may sugest they read about it here! Sadly it wasn't me that saw it, if it was viewable from my garden at any point since I got home then that's a big garden tick that's got away... :-C

    Norfolk Dragon/Damselflies reports/news

The 16th species of dragonfly for my garden was a female Emperor that oviposited a couple of times in the pond this afternoon before flying off towards Queens Hills.

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

One that got away...? My other half came rushing in earlier saying she just had a fritillary in the garden, answering my suspicious questions positively (not a Comma as too big and didn't have ragged wings and definitely bigger than a Small Tort and not a Tort sp. anyway). Described as large...

    Norfolk birding

If I lived near the coast I would seriously consider checking out the Buddleia displays at any garden centres in the area...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

I think I'm slightly closer David, I could walk to the area that had Clouded Yellow last year in 15 mins! Frustratingly, work looks set to get in the way of an easy twitch if access is arranged, unless it hangs around for a few days (or maybe I'll start late tomorrow...)

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Despite the rain and wind, my Buddleia held a nice selection of moths around 10pm this eve, with Old Lady, Bright-line Brown-eye, Herald, Dark Arches, Large Yellow Underwing and Yellow Shell either on or around it (plus a few others that avoided identification). Yesterday evening, in very windy...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

And finally, Golden Plusia, the least distributed of the macros I've had so far (recorded in 51% of 10k squares)
  19. C

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

And a few more: Brimstone, Swallow-tailed and Herald, plus Notch-wing Button - a micro recorded in 45% of 10k squares in Norfolk, making it the least widespread of the moths I've had so far. Also, Lilac Beauty.

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

A few of the moths I've had in the garden over the past few weeks: a female Ghost, Common Footman (showing the v-shape of grey onto the neck, the main feature that separates Common from Scarce), Phoenix, True Lovers Knot and July Highflyer.

    Norfolk Dragon/Damselflies reports/news

My first Brown Hawker of the year was in my garden yesterday eve.

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Reached 50 macro moths this evening for the garden with a real butterfly-like feel to the two new species - Swallow-tailed and Brimstone Moths!
  23. C

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

A quiet weekend for moths in my makeshift trap but the garden macro list now stand at 48 species. Nothing out of the ordinary but, given most species are new to me, Large Emerald, Herald and Small Blood-vein were the highlights, although getting my tentative identification of Small Dusty Wave...

    Norfolk Dragon/Damselflies reports/news

Thanks HD. I should probably make more effort to identify female dragons and damsels, I think I have the males sussed now (of Norfolk species) but the females are a totally different matter!!!

    Norfolk Dragon/Damselflies reports/news

Are you basing that on the all black legs or are there other features that point towards Ruddy as well? Ruddy would be a garden tick (and the 15th dragon/damsel species in my garden)...
