Pros
  • All round quality.
Cons
  • They are expensive but so are the nearest competitors.
After many months of consideration I bought the HD 10x42 binoculars having decided to upgrade my binoculars to the high end and Leica is the brand that I like the most. The other German and Austrian binoculars are excellent and in the end it all came down to personal preference.

They do become better the more you use them and like the previous reviewers comments, I believe a pair of Leicas will serve you for life and although expensive will last a life time with no need to upgrade.

Pros
  • Sheer optical excellence, and built like a brick shithouse.
Cons
  • Focus wheel feels rough(ish), but you get used to it.
Like the reviewer above, mine are non HD Ultravids and more than good enough for enough money!
They are just great and the more you use them, the better they get. The focuser is often criticised, but it does stop EXACTLY where you want it and STAYS there. I've gotten used to the feel now and prefer it to some of my other, silky smooth, bins.
In my opinion, anything else is less. By the way, the case, strap, rainguard and objective covers are designed by folks who seem to USE binoculars, unlike their Austrian competition!
Like dogs, Leicas are for life, not just Christmas.

  • Focusing wheel poor
I have had a go with these and for the money I think they over charge for what you get.

I have the non-HD version, which is NZ$500 cheaper. The Leica distributor advised me not to buy the HD unless I was sure I would spend a lot of time viewing in the rain or on a boat!
My eyes are not even close to 20/20 anymore, so I think I would only notice the water repellant part of the upgrade - not worth $500 to me.
The standard ones are amazing and I love them!
