Hi there!

I spotted this bird on the Brisbane River, Australia, in November. Does anyone know what it might be?

It's a heron, a Butorides like my local green heron, so... (checks Wikipedia's list of Herons of Australia), it should be a Striated Heron.

The IOC diary notes that the Little Heron Butorides atricapilla (which includes the Australian population) will probably be separated as a species from the Striated Heron B. striata.

Ultraconserved elements resolve the phylogeny of a globally distributed genus, Butorides (Aves: Ardeidae) This link, posted by Xenospiza on 13th January, explains the reasoning for recognizing three Butorides species.

Correction: that should have been four Butorides species, the Green, Lava, Striated and Little Herons.
