Overview
Part of this formerly fine area of wilderness in northern Sweden was lost to allow the development of hydro-electric power facilities but lakes, mountains and superb forests are still present.
Largely Scots Pine and Norway Spruce these ancient forests are found around the edge of the park and around the large Lake Akkajaure. Dwarf birch scrub forms the main habitat in more upland areas and Akkavare to the south of the lake is the park's highest point, reaching 2015m, further east the park is much lower and there are extensive marshes.
Birds
Notable Species
The uplands have Golden Eagle, Rough-legged Buzzard, Merlin and Peregrine Falcon, Snow Bunting, Eurasian Dotterel and sometimes Snowy Owl. Bluethroat, Redwing, Fieldfare and Brambling breed in the scrub and forest and Wood Sandpiper, Temminck's Stint, Purple Sandpiper and Red-necked Phalarope in the marshes.
