Identification
- Greyish upperside
- Buffy neck gradually more cinnamon on rear neck, crown and sides of head
- Black skin surrounding eye and black malar
- Relatively short, curved bill
- Lower breast pale
- Legs pinkish
- In flight shows dark flight feathers and the grey wing coverts can look whitish depending on the light.
Similar species
Black-faced Ibis differs in having black wattle below the bill which is relatively longer. It has a more prominent black area on underside including lower breast, and it has shorter tail.
Distribution
Andean Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and extreme northern Chile with possible vagrancy into extreme northern Argentina.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Andean Ibis and Black-faced Ibis were for a while considered two species, then one, and now again two separate species[2].
Habitat
Puna grassland
Behaviour
A resident species.
Voice is described as far-carrying, metallic honking, given as double tones.
