Identification

24–28 cm (9½-11 in)

  • Rufous-chestnut breast and belly
  • Dark brown crown with black borders

Distribution

South America: found in Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.

There are 3 subspecies[1]:

  • O. s. soderstromii:
  • O. s. speciosus:
  • Tropical east-central Peru
  • O. s. loricatus:
  • Tropical south-eastern Peru and eastern Bolivia

Habitat

Sub-tropical and tropical lowland forests. Disturbed secondary rain forest. Generally at heights around 800 m and 1750 m.

Deit

Little information available, but they scratch in the leaf litter, apparently for fruit and insects, in the same way as similar species.

Breeding

The only information appears to be that recently hatch chicks were seen from June to August.
