Identification

32 cm
Bright green overall. Underside of flight feathers yellowish. Grayish skin around eyes. Long, pointed tail. Often has orange flecks on throat

Distribution

Found in Mexico and northern Central America in deciduous and pine forests. Established in southern Texas where it is common in the Rio Grande Valley. Possibly introduced to Florida.

Taxonomy

Formerly placed in genus Aratinga.
Socorro Parakeet was recently split from Green Parakeet.

Subspecies

Three subspecies recognized[1]:

  • P. h. holochlorus in southern Mexico
  • P. h. brewsteri in northwest Mexico (Sonora, Sinaloa and Chihuahua)
  • P. h. rubritorquis from eastern Guatemala to northern Nicaragua, sometimes treated as full species Red-throated Parakeet

Habitat

Deciduous woodland and Pacific swamp forests.

Behaviour

Diet

There is not a lot recorded, however, they appear to eat fruit and seeds.
