Identification
This unmistakable bird has a striking black and white body with yellow skin around the eye and a yellowish belly. The male also has yellow on the nape.
Distribution
It is found in appropriate habitat in Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina.
Taxonomy
Monotypic.
Habitat
Savanna, grasslands, and scrub. In the Amazon region restricted to open areas near major rivers.
Behaviour
One of its favourite foods is the irapuá bee (Melipona ruficrus) which attacks orange trees so the White Woodpecker helps in the success of the Brazilian orange industry. It is social, and typically seen in small groups.
