Overview
The Mariana Avifauna Conservation (MAC) Programme
Due to the accidental appearance of the brown tree snake Boiga irregularis on Guam between 1945 and 1950, The Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) instigated the MAC programme, which started relocating endemic species to zoos or other snake free islands in the CNMI. A total of 8 species from six islands will be relocated by 2034.
Notable Species
These include; Guam Rail, Guam Kingfisher, Bridled White-eye, Golden White-eye, Nightingale Reed-Warbler, Rota White-eye and Mariana Swiftlet have either been moved or will be in the next translocations of the MAC programme.
Reintroduction to the Wild
The Guam Kingfisher is in the process of being introduced to the now preditor free Palmyra Atoll National Wildlife Refuge with its lush tropical rainforests. The move should be be finalised in 2023.
